One of the significant challenges facing the world today is global warming. The planet is experiencing a rise in temperatures, and this could be detrimental to life. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the current trend in global warming is mostly attributed to human activities that began in the mid-20th century. The unprecedented procession of these activities in the decades that followed up to now has left the planet facing risks of consequences of global warming. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels have pumped greenhouse gases into the atmosphere that continue to cause the rise in temperatures. While these gasses let the light from the sun pass through, they prevent heat from escaping. According to Casper (2010), the result of this is an increase is global warming that has led to melting of glaciers, the rise in sea levels, and change in weather patterns. The threat of global warming is thus real because of the collapse of wildfire and vegetation, melting of glaciers, acidification of seas, and more hurricanes. While the threat is more for future generations, the current one is experiencing the adverse effects of global warming.
The collapse of wildlife and vegetation as a result of global warming shows how real its threat is. Casper (2010) notes that the last century has seen worldwide temperatures rise by more than 1℉ and this has affected significantly wildlife and vegetation. The changes seen today as a result of global warming that affect wildlife and vegetation include a decline in animal and plant populations, insects emergence, and earlier flowering of trees. As informed by Casper (2010), global warming has not only altered natural processes, but it has also impacted more than 420 plant and animal species. With the effects happening worldwide, the threat of global warming to ecosystems is elevated. Plant and animal habitats have been disrupted due to global warming. As the temperatures of the earth continue to rise, animal species have to move to cooler areas. Casper (2010), notes that several species have been documented to have moved towards cooler or in areas that are elevated. This disruption in the ecosystem is attributed to global warming. Species that have moved to cooler areas include polar bears, butterflies, and beluga whales (Casper, 2010). This clearly shows that the species on earth are directly affected by the rising temperatures. The change in temperatures has also affected the migration of fish, birds, and insects. It is important to note that the maintenance of ecosystem is critical for ecological balance. Plants are critical for the survival of other species on earth. When plants become extinct as a result of global warming, other species are affected as well. Animals depend on plants for food and oxygen. They also provide habitats for animals. However, as temperatures rise, their population decline. Animals also are important for humans as they provide food and materials. Therefore, it is evident that global warming is a real threat facing the world because of its negative effect on plants and animals.
A major evidence of global warming is the melting of glaciers that the planet continues to experience. The result of melting of glaciers is that it poses danger to people living in adjacent areas. Also, the sea levels rise as more glacier melts. In regards to people living adjacent to glaciers, their lives are at risk as temperature rises. An example is the case of Peruvians, who according to Carey (2010) have suffered as a result of melting glaciers like no other people on earth. In the Cordillera Blanka mountain ranges, people live in close proximity to glaciers. As informed by Carey (2010), other areas where people live in close proximity to glaciers include the Himalayas, the Alps, Canada, Alaska, and Scandinavia. As the glaciers retreat, immediate danger is posed these people. The retreating leads to the formation of glacier lakes that cause hazards.
