Humans and Technology
Introduction
It is with great honor that people have to thank the forefathers of innovation such as Albert Einstein, for the great works they came up with especially with reference to the physical rules of physics. It is for this reason, that most of the humans have the ability to enjoy the fluid technological advancements that are dominating everyday life of humans and even animals. What is amazing is that, the likes of Einstein did their innovative works with the help of a few books and the power of their minds. There have been much more innovation in the technology realm, than would be written on a single book. Many people today would not imagine how big and slow the computer they have in their palm in the form of a Smartphone was when it was first invented (HYPERLINK "http://chronicle.com/blognetwork/castingoutnines/author/robert/" \o "View all posts by Robert Talbert"Talbert).
As more technological advances are made in the world, the way of life of the general public has continually changed. Technology has ensured that there are better gadgets and machines to make every other process of the human much snappier. It would be argued that technology has improved human life, by creating more time by accomplishing much more with great accuracy, effectiveness and efficiency (Grohol). Other than the fact that humans have virtually come up with machines that can do most of their chores, machines that were made a decade ago are now obsolete and in their place are better, more efficient machines, doing the same work and probably more at the touch of a button from any part of the world.
Today, one sends messages to anyone in any part of the world in an instance. It is also possible to talk to the other persons across the globe, making video conferencing and art to adore at the office. Making phone calls across the globe is much easier and convenient for all to use. Moreover, people no longer have to go to the bank, shopping, to the library and movies as they can do it seated on a park bench or anywhere else. In this era, one can control the room temperature; check their security cameras in their house in California, while on a business meeting in London from their Smartphone (Grohol).
Technologically Enslaved
One does not realize that they are slowly being colonized by all the goodies that the technology they have today at their fingertips, until there is a power blackout or the internet servers are down. It suddenly becomes apparent that, people become moody and agitated. No more television as they are connected to the internet and the computers do not work either because the power lines are down. The smartphones and the tablets are off because their batteries could not hold out for long, or the internet is simply down. There have been documented cases, where people feel sick because they lost they phones or even left them by mistake at home. Everything in that single moment changes, due to the fact that everyone and most of the gadgets that are around are all reliant on the technology.
Social Circles
A few decades ago, people used to interact physically. This meant that, people who wanted to meet for whatever reason had to arrange a meeting, the venue and the time that they would engage. During this age, the human interaction was positive. Later on, came the telephones and the human interaction dwindled by a significant percentage. For majority of the people that used to meet and interact face to face, all they had to do was to make a call to the other party (Rifkin). This meant that they could take longer without ever having to meet. While this meant that they saved a good amount of money and time previously used to arrange and execute the meeting, by cutting corners using telephones, it also meant the cost was higher with respect to the relationship that they had.
One of the platforms that have been used to try and bring people back together in social circles, where they can interact with other persons across the globe, is the social media platform. Ironically, the social media is still on the internet; one of the key components of technology (Rifkin). Today, there are over 200 social media websites used across the globe. By the year 2012, more than 58% of the world population was hooked on to one of the many social media websites. Some of the leading social media websites include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ among others. On average, these websites provide the users with an account where they can share their thoughts, pictures, videos and audios. Most of the social media platforms also ensure that the users have the means of meeting new people and old friends, where they can engage in conversations and share about various aspects of their lives from careers to relationships. The social media has evolved the way that people interact, such that even simple basic interactions where one is looking for a spouse to marry, they turn to technology. Physical interaction is a basic facet of any human being much like the animals which are also part of the animal kingdom (Kuszewski).
With the development of such technologies as the social media platforms, human interaction has been reduced to a few clicks. People no longer have the time to meet and have a positive association with other human being. Essentially, it would be right to say other than these technologies assisting in enhancing the humanity in people; there is more of becoming machine-like than being human. The idea behind social media may be to bring the people together once more however; it is building a larger rift among people. Most of the people cite that reliance on the technology of the social media not only saves time to interact but also makes it easier; there is also the antagonistic aspect of being unproductive. People feel that they are actually saving time interacting with their friends on the social media, at the workplace that is time wasted and a distraction to productivity. On average, it is estimated that more than 15 hours are spent on the social media every month by most of the employees. Ironically, even with the...
