The Events in the Movie WaterWorld Concerning Concepts from Diamond, Nolan, and Lenski

Research Paper Instructions:

Using major concepts from the class analyze any eco-apocalypse movie using specific concepts from Diamond and Nolan & Lenski. For Diamond you should use, at minimum his five factors, but also bring in specific comparisons to actual society’s collapses and his ideas from his chapters. For Nolan & Lenski you should bring in the POCET model and minimum, and also discussion of types of societies, analysis of the movies portrayal of society using sociological concepts (for instance stratification, types of political systems, cultural norms and values, etc.). Additionally, you should plan on using Irwin’s lecture additions for this analysis (for instance discussion of Carrying Capacity, Malthusian Disasters, etc.). Since every movie is different you’ll need to adapt your paper to the specifics of each portrayal. Plan on 6-8 pages (not including title page and reference page) following the usual criteria:
A page is 250-300 words. Adjust your margins and font accordingly.
Use whole sentences except when listing terms.
Reference the assigned reading/films/lecture when referring to specific ideas.
Use quotes when using text directly from these works or any other source.
If you are using other sources, cite them and provide reference information.
Presentation of ideas from other sources as your own work is plagiarism and subject to loss of grade on the test and/or class.
An exceptional paper will provide a solid description that thoroughly describes the movie, thoroughly cover basics from Diamond and Nolan & Lenski, brings significant additional material from all class sources to your analysis, presents these ideas with clarity and organization, presents insightful analyses from a sociological perspective.
You can choose any movies that fits the theme of societal collapse and the eco-apocalypse. Books or TV series can also be used. Drop me a note if you are uncertain whether this fits the assignment. WaterWorld Analysis
A world's social, economic, and political collapse could have devastating effects on people’s lives. Various movies have been produced to show how a failure of these factors could result in an eco-apocalypse. One of such movies is Kevin Reynold's movie, WaterWorld. The film outlines a world that has been fully submerged in water due to climatic change. The survivors live on water and search for dry land, later discovered on the top of Mount Everest. The movie is an example of what an economic and social collapse can do to the world. Therefore, this paper will outline WaterWorld's events concerning Diamond, Nolan, & Lenski.
Diamond outlines five factors that could result in the collapse of the world. One of the factors related to the movie is climatic change. The main reason the world in the film is underwater is climate change. The climatic change caused global warming, which led to the melting of the icebergs in the world. The melting icebergs led to a rise in sea levels, thus covering all the continents in the world. The survivors in the movie live in floating communities, which they refer to as atolls. Such is an indication of the devastating effects of climatic change and how it can result in social and economic collapse. Given the climatic change in the current world, the movie acts as an allegory to show the devastating effects of the climatic change. The icebergs are already melting, and the sea level is rising. Although the rise in sea level is at a low rate, the chances are high that it will cause significant future damage. Therefore, to avoid a situation similar to that outlined in the movies, action needs to be taken to lower the factors contributing to climatic change.
Diamond also outlines human environmental impact as a cause of the economic and social collapse. This factor can be related to the WaterWorld by the rising sea levels. The sea level has risen to cover the continents due to human activities that cause global warming. Among such activities are deforestation and air pollution. Air pollution has been one of the human activities in the current world that could have major environmental impacts. If these activities are not controlled, they would have a major impact on the environment, thus increasing the levels of global warming. An increase in climatic change could rise sea level, thus collapsing social and economic activities in the affected areas (Diamond). The people in the movie have to rely on the Mariner to bring the dirt. They are concerned about where he has been getting the ground because they have already destroyed the world that provided them with such substances. Hence, human-environmental activities could easily collapse an economy or all the activities in the world as a whole.
Political, social, and religious factors can also play a major role in the collapse of a world. WaterWorld presents a world where survivors strive to survive on limited resources. Such has led to the division of communities compared to political ideologies. For instance, the Smokers believe to be powerful enough to find Enola. Enola has a map of the mysterious dryland drawn on her back. Therefore, every community aims at getting to her to reach the dry land. This has led to divisions because every community considers itself worth living in the dry land. The concept of religion is evidenced by the dryland being considered mysterious. Following the world’s destruction by the rising sea levels, the communities consider a dry land a miracle. It is regarded as a second chance to the life that people used to have on dry land. At some point, Hellen tells the Mariner that she deserves to know where he got the dirt because humans used to own such areas. In this case, Hellen attempts to create a social relationship with the Mariner to recover what the humans have already lost. However, the aim of the social interaction is one-sided because Helen, as a human, is only interested in the source of the dirt. She is not interested in creating a meaningful relationship with the Mariner. One of the main reasons social interactions can lead to economic collapse is that social interactions are based on self-interests.
The attack by neighbors and loss of support from neighbors are evidenced in the movie. Every community in the film aims at finding the mysterious dryland. Such has created enmity between the communities as they attempt to get the map for the dryland. For instance, the smokers attack the community where Enola and Helen live to capture Enola, who has the map of the dry land drawn on her back. The issue has resulted in causalities and multiple attacks across the atolls. Such attacks represent how easily they can cause social unrest among people. The communities have a chance of moving to the dry land. However, they have allowed the land to divide their unity due to their selfishness. This concept can be compared to real-life situations whereby countries spend much of their time fighting each other over resources (Diamond). Such fights result in economic and social collapse among the involved parties. The absence of such disputes would create unity, thus making it easy for the countries to reach common beneficial goals.
