Case Study
Corporate Social Responsibility refers to business obligations in fulfilling the responsibilities of the stakeholders, hence maximizing its positive impacts. Business ethics means making morally appropriate decisions with an aim of inculcating the sense of conducting business responsibly. According to Sims, "Ethical behaviors enhances leadership."
Assume that a contracting officer at Glasmile Airbase is currently on a temporary leave to chair a community development meeting that is entitled to generate growth and development plan in the local area. During a break in the seminar, a colleague who you were sitting beside triggers a chat, only to realize that he is the senior government contractor with a national parastatal that is your closest affiliate. You first met this man a year ago when both of you were stationed to work in the same firm. While you were a junior member in the force, he was a Lieutenant Colonel to the entire force. Therefore, it means that you did not spend ample time together due to the differences in the rank. However, you crossed each other’s paths in the line of duty, meet ones in a while at the club and even exchanged some professional ideas.
Before the meeting reconvenes, he begins creating flashbacks on your past relations, setting a platform for discussing the development and fate of other colleagues. In the meantime, he hands you a business card. After small evaluation of the card, you realize that he can become an asset to your company. He requests to meet you after the meeting, pointing that he has business matters that he would wish to discuss with you. You accept his offer, but committing to yourself that whatever issue, you will precipitate a formal meeting with the senior executive so that you may discuss the business idea together with your latest client.
After the meeting is called off, both of you remain behind to discuss the business issue that you realize hinges on contracts. You carefully analyze the situation through taking note of the fundamental issues and promise your "client" that you shall conduct an intensive investigation concerning the matter after return to work. You assure him that you shall connect him with the right people to set the deal moving soon after reporting to work. While packing to leave, he stops you to compliment you on your reliable and a ‘businessman image.’ However, he emphasizes that there is an excellent reward attributed to how you ‘relate’ with your bosses. Considering that you have not been promoted to a higher position in the company, he imagines that a further talk could reap good fruits. In fact, this could be a life changing occurrence. Both of you agree to meet at "happy life" hotel to discuss this issue are you refresh the bones with couples of drinks.
In the course of conversation, he demonstrates his authority by indicating that he can slot you a better position in their company. However, you are not ready to change your job, perhaps down the roads. He asserts that there are "other ways" in which you can help one another. He finally surfaces his intentions by indicating that he targets you to "help a fellow friend" to maintain competition with other companies eyeing the government’s contracts. He promises to offer an eighth of what his company reaps!!

There is this deception that imprisonment of the offenders is a cure for the social problems, but this is not true. Still "fairness in ethical matters could be influenced by conflicts of interests" (Sims, 328). One disadvantage of this system is that people of color are the primary targets. Statistically, more than two million persons are locked in the U.S prisons. Disgracefully, more than 70% of those imprisoned are people of color; with the population of jailed women increasing alarmingly. It is the sad situation since black women are perceived as mothers to thugs and criminals in the society. Consequently, the incidence has led to the creation of racism where the Africans and the black Americans are assumed as the symbol of disgrace to the Americans population (Sims, 342). However, different studies have proved that the criminal activities are due to high unemployment rates, addiction to drugs, mental problems and illiteracy among the inhabitants. Sensibly, prisons do not take problems away from the society. Rather, they are just making individuals spend their life behind bars. At times, the projected feat of happens against the expectation of the federal agencies.
The proliferation of the prisons is proportional to the number of infrastructures required to be utilized by the imprisoned individuals. Contrary, the federal government is high on tightening the penalties to any offender. The introduction of strict measures along the involvement of the private companies in the securing the contracts for supplying the materials and infrastructures needed, the entire systems is currently referred to as "prison industrial complex." It is because: this system is not focused on transforming the lives of the offenders but rather subjecting them to harsh treatment and public humiliations (Sims, 188).
Prison privatization is focused on boosting the investments to the private companies. Accidentally, the roles and participations by different private companies do not cut a good image to the public. While these companies are engineering corporatization strategies, different interest groups are ganging up in sensitizing the federal government on the best practices to reduce social problems. For instance, the wages given to the imprisoned individuals is not enough to support their life and families. It highlights the importance of engaging the jail fellows into skill-driven activity so that they may live a better life after prison. Still, the government may open up health cares for combating mental problems and HIVs and rehabilitation centers.
Social ethics involves behaving or working in a manner that shall help the society. Social initiatives are aimed at reducing the problems facing the society. The government emphasizes on increasing the jobs opportunities, create education centers and legitimize anti-capitalist strategies. These aspects will guide the democratic future of U.S, eradicate racists and enhance social transformations.
Application
There are behaviors in our lives that merit protection from others. For examples, matters related to the social responsibilities are sensitive to human beings. Social responsibility is said to be "multidimensional, going beyond respect in connecting with others." It means that every human being has the freedom of making rational decisions and protection against any form of humiliations. Ethical conducts build trust with the members of the society as well as in the business situation. For instance, juveniles are prone to some criminal activities. Most of them do it without having a broadened understanding of the implications that could befall. Depending on the institutional policies, these young offenders are put behind bars over a given span. However, this move is irritating and malicious, bound to cause anarchy and division between members of one society.
Fairness and justices should constitute the values of decision makers in order to prevent the public from losing their confidence and trust upon them. Justice hinges on making the decision that do not create harm to individuals. While social responsibilities are at times devoted to creating an identity in the society, fairness and justices involves going beyond the law and regulating in establishing ethical decision to prevent humiliation, lack of respects and discriminations in the society. By the virtue of good approach, measures of reducing the problems rendered by the criminals would be cut by establishing training and rehabilitation centers where all offenders irrespective of the race and gender will be taught on responsible behaviors and the appropriate means of applying the learned skills. Despite many versions developed in attempts to define ethical behaviors, we support the concept of "personal, professional and social responsibility" in decision making so as to make the world a better place for all human beings.
Higgins indicates "justice and fairness are essential in giving an individual a sense of belonging." Ethical decisions are made through evaluating the alternative provisions on morality, and getting the facts based on justice and fairness. What we can deduce from entire scenario is that:
* If every human being could have an opportunity of making self-decisions, it could maximize creating rationality to different ways of life.
* Social responsibility is not only inclined in creating an identity for the society, but also entitled to implement the values exhibited by that society.
