This paper is going to provide an in-depth analysis of the Islamic religious subculture. It’s going to shade some light on its place in the American society, the historical and social factors that have shaped its experience, demographic information pertaining its distribution, its contribution to the culturally pluralistic society and many more. It’s without a doubt that Islamic religion has been in existence for many centuries and just like any other religion its influence on the day-to-day activities either directly or indirectly is quite profound. This particular group (Islam) has aroused so much interest in the past decades due to cases of religious extremism that have had fatal consequences not only in America ( e.g. 9/11 incident) but also in other parts of the world. It is because of such reasons that I chose Islam as my group of interest.
The incorporation of Islam into the American society dates back centuries ago. On the account of American history, 10 to 15 percent of the African slaves that were shipped to America were said to be Muslims. However, once they were in America, it was really difficult for them to keep on practicing their religion and even went further to be forced into Christianity. However, there was a group of African-Americans on the coast of Georgia that managed to stand firm with their Islamic faith until the onset of the 20th century.
Between the years of 1878 and 1924, there was a large number of Muslims from Lebanon and Syria that made their way into America as immigrants in search of greater economic opportunities. Most of them settled in Iowa, Dakotas, Michigan and Ohio. One of the well-recognized employers of Muslims and blacks was the Ford Company. It took advantage of them and had them work in very hot and hostile conditions of the factory.
During the same period, the massive migration of the blacks into the North aided in encouraging the African-American Islam to revive and expand the African-American Muslim Nationalist Movement that is still in existence to this date.
During the 1930s and 40s, an establishment of communities and building of mosques by Arab immigrants commenced. This was to add to the mosques that were already built by the African-American Muslims, and by 1952, there were greater than 1000 of them in North America.
After 30 years of excluding many immigrants, the United States opened its doors a second time in 1952 which allowed for the massive influx of an entirely new group of Muslims. Some of whom made their way from Palestine (most came in 1948 after Israel was established), Egypt and Iraq. The 1960s also saw a wave of Muslims from South-east Asia coming into America. Muslims also made their way from Asian, Africa and even Latin America.
The estimated number of Muslims in the United States varies depending on the source. According to the American Muslim Council, there are about 5 million Muslims while the non-partisan Center for Immigration Studies talks of figures closes to 3 to 4 million. However, the American Religious Identification Study that was done by the University of New Fork that was completed in 2001 estimates the number of Muslims to be at 1,104,000.
When it comes to individual states, Illinois tops the list of Muslim adherents per 100,000 people, having 2800.
