Impact of Parents/Guardians Levels of Earning on the Quality of their Children’s Education
Introduction
Children depend on their parents and guardians for their daily survival and living. The parents and guardians take care of all the financial support of their children and their young dependents. These financial provisions include proper housing, education, proper dressing, entertainment, and many others. Parents and guardians provide to their children according to their levels of income. Parents/guardians, whose sole source of income is salaries or wages, provide to their dependents according to the level of their salaries/wages. The quality of everything the parents and guardians provide depends on their levels of earnings.
Quality of education is defined as the level of excellence in education (Yarris 180). Education excellence or quality has a vast definition. Some organization like United Nations defines the quality of education depending on students' performance on international assessments (Morgan). The governments have based their determination of the quality of education in their countries on the international rankings. The parents and the locals also have their definition of quality education; the parents and the locals believe that quality of education is enshrined in the institutions of high standards.
The standards of these institutions are based on their national ranking. The ranking mostly is based on students’ academic performance, health and safety, survey responses, resources and facilities, cultural diversity, teachers, sports and finesses and extra-curricular activities (Nolan). Parents and the public believe that highly ranked schools have intelligent students who can respond well to surveys and perform best in both classwork and field activities. The public believes that the highly ranked schools have the best facilities of learning, e.g., modernized laboratories – both science and computer laboratories. The public also believes that the proper living standards in these schools are high and this can explain why the students or pupils in these schools are healthy.
Teachers in highly ranked schools are better off that than teachers in lowly ranked schools. The teachers have common knowledge about the students and the curriculum, but teachers in highly ranked schools are believed to be better than those in poorly ranked schools (Obidike). The teachers in highly ranked schools are motivated to do their work through the students’ performance and also the schools’ administrations in conjunction with the parents. Also, these teachers are exposed to further training in seminars, and also their exposure is enhanced by the number of visits they pay to better schools than theirs. The teachers’ exposure and motivation improve their quality which by extension improves the quality of education in highly ranked schools.
Education is an expensive venture for both the parents and the guardians. The parents/guardians have to part with large sums of money to take their children to school. The cost varies with the lowly ranked schools perceived as cheap and highly ranked schools perceived as expensive. The desire of each parent is to take their children to school to the highest level possible and get the best quality education. However, this desire is hampered by the cost they have to incur to take their children to school. Parents who depend primarily on their salaries to pay for their children’s education are worst hit by the expenses. They have to sacrifice their lives by delaying the purchase of some essential properties and cutting on their retirement savings (Clark).
The lowest earning individuals in the U.S receive an average of $13,524 per year with the highest earners receiving $45,230 annually. The private schools which most people believe offer quality education average cost per year is $8,918 for elementary school and $ 13,524 for high schools (Private School Review). The cost of private schools as seen is a real burden to parents earning the lowest salary. In the public schools, the cost is lower since some are run by the local cities and the cost subsidized through the money collected from property taxes (Samuels). The quality of the education in the public schools is low since the subsidy is not sufficient to provide quality education to the students/pupils (Samuels).
The cost of private and public schools and the public’s notion of quality of education lead us to the research question. The research question:
Does children's education quality correlate with the amount of salaries parents and guardians earn per year? This question is only valid to parents/guardians who solely rely on their salaries.
Motivation of the Research Question
The academic success of every child depends on the choice of the right school. These right schools provide quality of education according to the public notion. The high cost of private schools has left most parents with the option of taking their children to public schools. The public schools’ expenses also vary from state to state, with some best public schools charging tuition fees that are beyond low salaried parents’ abilities. Some parents are not even able to afford all the expenses of their state public schools. The ability or inability of parents to pay for their children’s fee in highly ranked schools has resulted to variation in quality of education in the U.S. The public has been left wondering if the higher earning individuals are the only people who can afford a quality education.
Possible Answer to the Question
The living standards of people primarily depend on their income. The life standards dictate which kind of schools parents take their children and the quality of education their children will acquire. In this research question, it is expected that high earning parents will take their children to best public and private schools while lowly earning parents will take their children to lowly ranked public and private schools.
