Introduction
The sharing economy has diversified its roots across the world thus raising both unprecedented challenges and opportunities in the society. Ridesharing companies like Uber have indicated their great concern on road safety through the provision of effective services and credible partners including their drivers especially on the issue concerning drunk driving. The company has also greatly disrupted the transportation industry particularly to the taxicab companies and drivers as the Uber intensifies its services in the entire transportation market. Focusing on the positive perspective of the Uber Company, transport system is simplified with the provision of automated transportation and digitalization of the process. Due to the impacts that Uber has indicated in the transportation industry, the company has received both applauding and cruel perception by society as it influences the lives of different industry stakeholders differently as discussed herein.
Uber Company has greatly impacted global social and economic aspects, particularly in the transportation industry. The major question that the research conducted herein intends to answer is what impacts have Uber brought in society. The address of this question will mainly focus on both positive and negative impacts of Uber in the society and specifically in the transportation industry and the entire team of stakeholders. The major objective of this research is to identify and find out the impacts of Uber to society. The research will focus on finding out how Uber has influenced the transportation industry and hence the impacts on the social lives of the involved stakeholders. The objectives will be categorized into positive impacts, negative impacts, and the possible solutions to enhance the identified impacts. The research findings will, therefore, be used to determine the fate of the Uber industry in the transport industry and the best approach to take in control of identified negative impacts and intensification of the positive influences in the system.
Methodology
Introduction
This section provides the research methodology of the research, critically explaining how the research will be conducted throughout the study process. The author will, therefore, address issues regarding research strategies, research methods, research approaches, and data collection methods, sample selection, research processes, applied type of data analysis, ethical considerations and research limitations of the conducted study.
Conducting this research will involve reviewing the documented information through the previously conducted researches on the impacts of Uber in the transport industry and in particular how the services offered influences the society. The study will, therefore, take an approach of new research on the advancement of already existing studies to help in drawing relevant results over the issue of concern. The study will take a qualitative research method as it measures the theoretical perspectives of how Uber has influenced society in the transport sector. Qualitative research method as applied herein has greater impacts for small samples with non-measurable and non-quantifiable outcomes. The use if qualitative research approach is effective in shaping the researcher’s skills and abilities as well as interpretation of his/her judgment and interpretation of the situation.
The study uses in-depth interviews which mainly involve personal and unstructured interviews which identified the participant’s emotions, feelings, and opinion regarding the issue on the impacts of Uber in the society. The aim of using this method is because the researcher will directly interact with the participants thus eliminating non-response rates and encouraging the interviewer to provide relevant and credible information regarding the research question. The study will, therefore, make use of semi-structured questionnaires as an interview guide toward the satisfaction of the objectives and purpose of the research. The study provided herein used a purposive sampling method in the selection of the research sample. The method presets a non-probability sampling technique whereby the participants are selected on their basis of knowledge and understanding of the topic under research (Freedman et al., 2007). In this study, the researcher selects participants with special knowledge and relationship with the situation and relevant work experience in the cab and transport industry, and the population is believed to be directly affected by the situation.
The study involved measuring the position of the society before and after the establishment of the Uber system in the industry to determine the experienced impacts, and the population affected both directly and indirectly. The study will also determine how Uber have influenced the profitability and workforce in the society specifically in the transport system and the economic impact of Uber to the society. The information gathered from personal interviews will be analyzed critically to help in drawing a conclusion and providing relevant recommendations depending on the findings of the study. The comparability of the gathered data is made possible and easier through categorization of the information into the theme and sub-theme sections. This method of data analysis in reduction and simplification of thus enabling the production of measurable results on the determination of impacts of Uber in the society as the main problem of the research.
Any research is relevant when it is protected by ethical guidelines which ensure security and safety of the data collected. In this case, the researcher provides participants with an assurance deal that the information collected from them is to be used for research purpose only and not to be disclosed to any other party or individuals for any other purpose than the intended one. The participation for the study is free and voluntary, and no one will be forced to issue information concerning the study topic. The participants will also be fully informed about the purpose of conducting this research to motivate them to provide effective and essential information concerning the topic under study. The major limitation of this research is the allocated time to conduct the study. The research may require more time to observe the trend as the transport industry is currently changing especially with the rapid technological advancements. The sample size selected is also small which would influence the reliability of the research. In some cases, participants especially drivers employed by the Uber company may be biased, failing to provide correct information especially on the negative impacts of the company to avoid tarnishing the company’s name.
