I don't really care as it's not a clarity concern, but just a heads up that technically this is an error Maheshwari and Shaukat--PRJA Spuryt--PRJA Bianchi--book I know this is book because you say so but I would not know this from the citation alone. The title should be in italics, you are missing the publisher (springer) and the date is 2014--all this information can be found via the link you have though so that's good! Dasgupta--.com site good summaries Comments after reading: Nice work, but some MLA concerns, see notes above on how to correct. Also, is healthline an academic source? I'm inclined to think not as it is a .com site....use your judgement here but know my alarm/red flags have me worried it won't be helpful to you? Other than those notes though, well done!
ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS
Research
In class, as well as in a library orientation, we will spend time discussing what constitutes
“academic” research. Students will conduct research, and will use their findings to support an
argument of their choosing.
Paper
The research paper must be convincing, well developed, make use of between 5-8 academic
sources (at least two of which are peer reviewed journal articles, at least one of which must be
a book, and at least one of which must be a web site/online source) The paper must also use
correct MLA citation and formatting (including a works cited page).
The main point of this paper must be a compelling, debatable, argumentative thesis that is
*supported* by academic research.
Up to 2 additional, non-academic sources may be used, but they should not be emphasized
anywhere near as heavily as academic sources.
NO topic is off limits! As long as you can assert a debatable claim, find academic research to
support your point, and get involved in some way, it’s fair game!
Personal Involvement
Students will be required to DO Something, anything, to get involved in the cause, issue, or
topic that they will be writing on. What this looks like will vary greatly, and we will discuss many
options.
Presentation
The presentation, which will be our final assignment of the semester, must share the student’s
thesis, personal involvement, and cite research sources as needed (we will discuss how to do
this). The presentation will be an *overview* of the argument students make in their research
papers (obviously we won’t have the time for students to share every detail of their
arguments).
These presentations will be assessed based on quality of organization, depth, public speaking
ability, and clarity (which includes citation).
Important points
1. Works Cited: Each of the sources has a clear, correctly formatted, MLA citation
2. Summary: There is a clear summary of every piece, explaining the main point/ findings
3. Required Sources: There is a minimum of 5 sources included, two of which are peer reviewed journal
articles, one of which is a book, and one of which is an online source. This is clear because of correct
citation
4. LOC’s: There are no or very few errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, MLA format, etc.
Working thesis: "Which is why parents should instill strict curfews for children to enforce at least 8 hours of sleep"?
Requirements
• Minimum of 3500- 5000 words, or roughly 7-10 pages double spaced MLA format

In this book, Matt Bianchi explores sleep deprivation and disease on the body, brain, and behavior. The book deeply highlights the delicate interaction between neurological diseases and sleeping disorders. It brings out the understanding that the interrelationship between neurological and sleep disorders is considered bidirectional, with some neurological conditions considered to increase the likelihood of getting sleep disorders while the reverse may also apply. According to the author, neurological disorders, for instance, may disrupt sleep patterns, and sleep disorders, in turn, may either cause the neurological symptoms to intensify or may even be the actual cause of a neurological condition. It becomes clear from this reading that addressing the root causes of sleep-related disorders may improve quality of life in addition to reducing neurological complications among individuals. Through highlighting the treatability of many sleep disorders, the reading reinforces the need to investigate sleep conditions and their management in vulnerable people with neurodegenerative diseases. I find this book beneficial because it broadens my understanding of what sleep deprivation means and causes. Further, the book sets a platform for understanding strategies that must be taken to address sleep deprivation before it triggers any impacts. However, the book does not explore the issue of sleep deprivation and its impacts on academic performance explicitly. Still, it can be used to steer debates on how neurological alterations can lead to sleep deprivation or lack thereof and the impacts that such alterations could trigger on learners. Also, the book does not accommodate any research. As such, its claims can be used to experiment and determine their validity.
Dewald-Kaufmann, Julia F., Frans Jeroen Oort, and Anne Marie Meijer. "The Effects of Sleep Extension on Sleep and Cognitive Performance in Adolescents with Chronic Sleep Reduction: An Experimental Study." Sleep Medicine, vol. 14, no. 6, 2013, pp. 510-517.
In this experimental study, Dewald-Kaufmann, Oort, and Meijer investigate the effects of the gradual extension of sleep duration on adolescents who suffer significantly from chronic sleep reduction. The study involves sleep extension for 55 adolescents with symptoms of chronic sleep loss, in addition to a control group that acts as a placebo against the intervention group. During three weeks, participants' sleep patterns are monitored by actigraphy, with the first week as a sleep baseline and the subsequent two weeks as experimental weeks. Students in the intervention group are taught to shift their bedtime by 5 minutes nightly to extend their sleep and their weekends should have similar bedtime schedules. Cognitive functioning is evaluated by pre-experimental manipulation and post-experimental manipulation. The learners who were in the sleep extension group began their bedtime routine earlier, had earlier bedtimes, and spent more time in bed as well as having longer sleep duration than those in the control group in the last week of the study. Study results show that the group that got additional sleep also demonstrated higher performances for visuospatial processing and other aspects of cognitive performance while those in control did not produce significant effects. These results and this article imply that adequate sleep may help youths with chronic sleep shortages to both have improved sleep patterns and cognitive function. The findings by Dewald-Kaufmann et al can be vital in understanding the knowledge gaps when it comes to the relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance. It also sets grounds for the necessary experiments when there is need to determine the links between sleep deprivation and academic performance. However, it is impossible to rely on the findings by Dewald-Kaufmann et al. exclusively because their study is limited only to a sample frame of 55 respondents. Additionally, this experimentation needs to take a cohort approach to allow for the assessment of the learners through multiple examination formats.
