Flushing Area
Located within Queens County in New York, United States, Flushing is one of the several cities in the United States of America that are dominated by people from Asian origin. With a geographical area of approximately 853 acres, the city has a population density of 84.4 people per acre, according to the 2010 census results. The total population of Flushing City, according to the last census result, is 72,008, with the majority of the inhabitants being of Asian origin, which makes up to 69.2% of its total population. Whites from 9.5 % of Flushing population while African-American and Aboriginal people make 4.2 % and 0.1 % of Flushing's population, respectively (Grieco et al, 2019, p. 1).
With the high influx of Chinese people in the town, Flushing has been regarded as the fastest-growing Chinatowns not only in New York but also in the United States at large. Though widely dominated by Chinese people, the original inhabitants of the area, according to research, were the Matinecoc Indians. It is believed that these Indians lived in Flushing long before the white colonies were established in the United States. The majority of the current Chinese Inhabitants in Flushing only moved in the city in the 1970s when they started to develop the Flushing China Town (Zhou , 2001). A high population of Chinese people in the area has resulted in the dominance of Chinese culture in the area, with the most notable Chinese cultural element in the city being the Chinese cuisine. This dominance has led to the area to be considered as the “Food Mecca” (Feldman, 2017, p.1).
