HUGHES AND MORRISON
Langston Hughes and Toni Morrison are renowned writers that have left a mark in the world of creative writing (Silver & Harvey, 12). Hughes was an American novelist, poet, social activist, playwright as well as columnist, and was popularly known for his best work in times of Harlem Renaissance. On the other hand, Morrison is an American editor, novelist as well as professor. The writing works of the two bear some comparison as well as contrast in consideration of themes, writing styles and background. Background
The beginning of life for Hughes was not a smooth road, as he experienced the pain of his parents’ divorce at a tender age. He was born on the first day of February year one thousand nine hundred and two, in Joplin Missouri. His father relocated for Mexico and he was taken to live with his grandmother until the age of thirteen years. His youth represented poverty due to the separation of his parents. Hughes lived a nomadic kind of life as he kept on moving from his mother to his father and later to New York in nineteen twenty one. His father had sent him some money that he used to enroll to Columbia University and started his writing. He wrote and published his first verse in the magazine called, ‘The Crisis’. It was when Hughes lived in Lincoln, Illinois that he started writing poetry in depth. Hughes had to perform odd jobs even after his graduation where he worked as bus boy, cook and launderer. He also travelled in Europe and Africa while working as a seaman. In the year nineteen twenty four, he moved to Washington D.C and published his first book of poetry and the release of his first novel, ‘without laughter’, became a success as he was awarded the Harmon gold medal intended for literature. Hughes used his talent of poetry, plays, novels as well as essays to encourage his people, raise concerns regarding social, and race justice.
Writing styles
Even though Hughes was known in his contribution and participation in other genres, he was mainly praised as a poet. In his poetic career, he sought to capture the experiences, voices, emotions as well as spirit of the African American that lived in his times. He was determined to reflect in his poetry the daily lives of the working class culture. The themes and topics that are evident in his writings are racism, lynchings, prostitution, and teenage pregnancy as well. In the writing styles, he could use vernacular in the verses, which drew a great deal upon the rhythms, cadences of blues, jazz and gospel songs (Hughes, Hubbard, Rampersad & Sanders, 20).
