Realism Reflection in Fahrenheit 451
Abstract
Fahrenheit 451, narrates a story of a fireman who ironically starts setting a fire instead of assisting people to put out the fire. The book depicts some of the serious issues of the control of the masses by the media, suppression of the kind and banning of books. For example, in part one of this book, the chapter indicates the degenerated future in which books and sovereign thinking are prohibited. The Implicit hope and faith of Bradbury is a representation of a working-class fireman. Realism is a writing device that tries to link the fiction being written to real-world events. Most of the writers will try to predict the future society so as their work can live for long over generations. Bradbury was a professional scientist and a writer to produce one of the greatest works to have been proved by modern society. When he wrote the novel Fahrenheit 451 in the early 50s, he did this basically to rebuke a lousy culture that was developing in the society; burning books. The American society at this era had developed a bad trait of burning books, newspapers and school papers at any time anywhere. This became a concern to professionals such as Bradbury who considered it as burning knowledge instead of conserving it. He decided to condemn it in a different polite way; by enlightening those that were actively burning and to the future by also retargeting future prospects. In the book, he depicts how society had become ignorant by burning books. The trend had gone to the extent of government assigning duties to the fire department for collecting old libraries from people and burning them. Writing is a way of preserving knowledge for future reference, but the society was not aware of this. Instead, it went to the extent burning religious books such as the Bible. This was the main theme for writing the book; to stop realistic society in McCarthy's era for burning the books. Bradbury went on to predict the future society, which has positively proved his work. Throughout his work, he has used high speed moving cars that are existing in the modern world. Use of television and technological tools are other examples that are real in modern society. Generally, the novel has pondered realism by exactly reflecting his work.
Bradbury has set the novel in a particular house in the future. His love for science is seen when he describes how Mildred lives in her house. In the book, Bradbury states “he hung up his black-beetle-coloured helmet and shined it, he hung his flameproof jacket neatly; he showeredluxuriously, and then, whistling, hands in pockets… (Bradbury p1). This clearly indicated how technology is likely to advance in future. He predicted housing in the house that will lead to the minimal use of candles. Bradbury predicts the future to be dominated by huge flat TV screens. This is real in modern society as many apartments have huge TV screens installed while some owned by individuals. Mildred loves hearing music, to be precise, loud music. Well, in the novel, Mildred earphones have gone wireless as she uses Bluetooth earphones. This is what happens in the current society as people are seen with earpiece Bluetooth devices that are used for communication and hearing of music. No one could see that in the 50s.”There are many "Mildred’s" in modern society as they are seen walking with devices in their eyes which makes Bradbury’s work present a clear realism in the current society” (Kahan et al. 60). The life Mildred lives; surrounded by a huge screen and her love for music are some of the technological tools that part of the modern society, especially youths who are in love with them.
In the novel, Mildred is depicted to behave like a baby. Mildred is used to getting information from media; watching television programs and browsing media updates. Montag says “His wife in the TV parlour paused long enough from reading her script to glance up” (Bradbury p8) When Montag asks her a question, she is not even to think first as she required the assistance from her media and other online sources. The intensive use of media and online sources to get information is current culture for students, scholars and the society as a whole. “People are unable to be confident in what they believe in, or their answers and they rely on getting proof from various online sources. Social media has taken another major step for six decades ago. Bradbury describes that people are seen to communicate with each other on a wall as they easily read each other’s profiles. This is a depiction of the modern social media which has taken a major step in sophistication” (Mancini 103). For example, in part one of this book, the chapter indicates the degenerated future in which books and sovereign thinking are prohibited. Facebook is a clear example in modern American society which connects friends and relatives on a wall where there can easily chat with each other. The society today especially the youth are “married” with technology bringing a clear realism in Bradbury’s work.
