This is titled as a course project for a survey of western art class. I am writing a 10 page paper identifying whether Gustav Klimt is a true expressionist or not, by analyzing his works of art. I have a short list of sources that I wish to be used in some manner. They're all quality sources, and any other number of sources can be added to complete the paper. Gustav Klimt
Introduction
It is so unimaginable how people value art. Not even the modern one but also the classical ones.
This begs the question what is art and why do we value imagines of kings, saints, battles, goddesses, cities or even the landscapes. Go to any house whether for rich or poor and you will be amazed by the kind of images hanged on the wall, on top of the carbonates, or even on the ceilings. The kind of images in each house portrays the owner of the house depending on his interest or perceptions towards the artists.
Art works started long time ago and their history shows how sculptors, painters, and architects over the ages have expressed their different beliefs. These beliefs could be political, religious, cultural or even aesthetic, all the way from civilization of the Greece, Mesopotamia, and Egypt, to the years of revolution in the nineteenth and twentieth centaury. Art has played a critical role in reflecting the ideals and conflicts of mankind. The whole thing started with what was reality but it has now changed to a world of imagination (Nina 38).
As the discipline evolved in North America, Europe, and Middle East the kind of artwork made where pushed to a higher level. Different artist were inclined to different thought and belief hence the birth of expressionism. It is believed to have developed at the same time in different countries that were engaging in art works before the year 1905. However, it was the Germany and Austria Expressionism that engaged themselves on symbolic colors and imagery things that were exaggerated. Although it developed particularly a German character the French Fauvism in France is linked with this symbolic color of German Expressionism (Nina 41).
No doubt also to bring the famous Australian painter Gustav Klimt on board as one of the contributors to this works. He is one of the most recognized Vienna’s advocator of Art Nouveau, which was known in German as Jugendstil referring to a youth style. He can be recharged as one of the greatest 20th century decorative painters and particularly he produced one of the century’s most important bodies of erotic art. Due to the influence of Europeans artwork the academic painter developed his own style. His position as the co-founder and first president of Vienna secession ensured his kind of works was influential all over. The guy never married but he is known to have fathered fourteen kids (Nina 48).
Expressionism
This term is basically used to signify the use of distortion and exaggeration for emotional effect which come on board at the beginning of 20th century. The paintings have to be applied in a stylish sense and more concern is on the use of intense color, disjointed space and disconcerted brushstrokes. This kind of style not only affected the fine arts but also had a lot of impact on dance, literature, theatre and cinemas (Luqman 34)
In these kinds of works the artist tries not to portray the objective reality of things but brings out the inner subjective responses and emotions of different objects or events arouses in him. Its message is driven home through exaggeration, primitivism, distortion, and fantasy. Expressionism can therefore be regarded to have had a lot of impact on the modern artists and all the art movements that come afterwards. Of particularly interest are its qualities of highly subjective, personal, and spontaneous self expression (Luqman 39)

This kind of works are the opposite of what is portrayed in impressionism; the movement in French painting, which is also referred to as optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Its slogan; a human eye is a marvelous instrument; its impact to the world should be lasting and huge. The name was coined as artist embraced the nickname they were labeled due to their conservative attitude. On contrary, the goals of expressionism were to ensure that the person impressions suggested by the surrounding environment was expressed while sensitive to the world’s representation. The search for uniformity in the artworks where not key to expressionism, but, their main targets were what the artist can achieve in expressing the imaginative paint in reference to his area of interest (Luqman 36)
This movement as said earlier started in Germany in 1905 and it has been thought to have originated from the medieval art forms and more specifically from people like; Cézanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. The most well known Germany expressionism includes; Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Lionel Feininger, George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, the Austrian Oskar Kokoschka, the Czech Alfred Kubin and the Norwegian Edward Munch. For the period of his stay in Germany, the Russian Kandinsky was also an expressionism devotee (Luqman 76)
In the late 19th century, the movement had become famous and one of the key figures at this time was Gustav Klimt, who worked in the Australian art nouveau style of the Vienna secession as indicated earlier. He was the mentor to one of the great painter of the time Egon Schiele. He introduced him to the movement through the work of classical painters of Edward Munch and Vincent van Gogh.
Beyond Expressionism
After the crumbling of the more formal Expressionist groups in Germany, this kind of movement continued to exist in different parts of the world through individual arts that followed their mentor artist. Some of the best well known people to follow this line art works where people like Paul Klee and Max Beckmann. The spirit went down again but resurfaced again through key artist like Francis Beckon of the United States of America and Anselm |Kiefer of Germany towards the end of 20th century (Bassie 78).
Expressionism continued to evolve in a variety of ways through the work of individual artists like Paul Klee and Max Beckmann. The Expressionist spirit resurfaced again across the world throughout the 20th century through: Francis Bacon in Britain, the Abstract Expressionists in the USA and eventually returning to Germany in the form of Anselm Kiefer in the last quarter of the century. Max Beckman sustained Die Brucke's spirit of objection and association with the art of the past in his worrying metaphors of victimization and estrangement. These powerful images, triggered by his shocking practices of the trenches in the medical corps during world war one, often used the spiritual format of a triptych for their work of art, recalling rebirth art like the Isenheim Altarpiece (Bassie 103).
The British painter, Francis Bacon (who lived between 1909 and 1992 was also not left behind; he used the triptych format in his works, convulsive images of the world war one and abandonment. He claimed that his works were never influenced by any expressionism artist. Some of his works includes electrifying version of 'Pope Innocent X' (Bassie 79).
Expressionism Key Ideas
The development of expressionism brought to the discipline new standards and ideas in the judgment and creation of art. The art work was specifically coming out of the actual artist rather than been influenced by the external visual surrounding. The composition of the art work became irrelevant in assessing the quality of the art work, what was more important been the character of the artist’s feeling expressed in the art work. This was achieved through the focus in employing swaying, swirling and exaggeratedly executed brushstrokes in the expression of their subjects (Eva, Gustav, and Stephen 335).
Through their arguments with the built-up world of the early twentieth century, Expressionist artiste developed an influential mode of social censure in their meandering figural renderings and bold colors.
