Introduction
Oppression and injustice are used in this context to mean the presence of a violation of an individual’s values in accordance to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Deutsch 7). Oppression is experiencing repeated, widespread, and systematic injustice. According to Harvey (1999), civilized oppression comprises of all forms of oppression in everyday normal life. Therefore, is widespread and repeated injustice that is systematic and may not be not be extreme and involves the legal system (Deutsch 10). These are the deep injustices certain groups in society experience due assumptions that are often unconscious and reactions of well-meaning individuals that have ordinary interactions supported by the media and existing stereotypes and structural features within bureaucratic hierarchies and market mechanisms (Deutsch 10).
The Dressmaker by Khair Khana narrates the story of real-life heroine and a young entrepreneur whose tailoring business created job opportunities for women within her surroundings during the years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Kamila Sadiqi as a student in Kabul under training to become a teacher never expected her life to change the way it did over the next few years. The Taliban took over Kabul in the 90s and set up new rules and a way of life that changed Kamila’s life and her family’s future. Under the Taliban rule, Kamila and other women in Afghanistan were oppressed as they were stripped of their rights. Kamila was forced out of school and banned from going to school. In addition, she was confined to her house and banned from working with the Taliban soldiers constantly moving around to enforce these laws. When her father and brothers flee, Kamila is left to be the breadwinner. Armed with determination and a needle and threat, Kamila set up a sewing and tailoring workshop. Due to her entrepreneurial spirit, fearlessness and skilled fingers she builds and by recognizing the ability to change her mindset she brought hope to her family and motivated other women who came to her to not only buy dresses, but also look for new opportunities.
History of Afghanistan
Afghanistan is also known as the crossroads of Central Asia with a history marred with turbulence. Archeological evidence reveals that civilization began around 3000 BC AND 2000 BC. Alexander the great took over Afghanistan in 331 BC and 327 BC squashing local resistance CITATION Byr12 \p 3 \l 1033 (Byrd 3). Together with his successors (the Seleucids) they brought Greek cultural influences in the region and after a short time, the Indian Mauryan Empire took control of the Southern part of the country and introduced Buddhism. In the third century BC, Kushans who were of a nomadic tribe established a cultural empire and commercial centre. The Afghan region became fragmented and within the Iranian Sassanian Empire protection when the Kushan Empire ended (Byrd 3).
The Arabs invaded the whole region in 642 AD introducing Islam and they gave away rule to the Persians who had control of the area until they were ousted by the Turkic Ghaznavids in 998 (Byrd 3). Mahmud’s dynasty was short lived and various princesses tried to rule different sections of the country until the Mongolian invasion led by Genghis Khan who died in 1227. This was followed by a succession competition between petty chiefs and princess well into the 14 century when Tamerlane incorporated Afghanistan into his Asian Empire (Byrd 3). Ahmad Shah Durrani unified the Pashtun tribes in 1747 creating the Durrani Empire that marked the beginning of today’s Afghanistan and became a buffer state between British Indian Empire and the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Following the third Anglo-Afghan war Afghanistan regained full independence from the United Kingdom CITATION Byr12 \p 3 \l 1033 (Byrd 3).
The democracy did not last long because in 1973 a coup and in 1978 a Communist center-coup. In 1979, the USSR invaded Afghanistan in support the weak Afghan Communist regime, an action that sparked a long destructive war. The internationally supported anti-communist Mujahedin rebels placed a lot of pressure on the USSR and in 1989 withdrew from the country. Subsequent years of civil war followed an in 1996 Kabul fell into the Taliban a Pakistani sponsored movement that came up in 1994 to end the civil war and anarchy in the country (Byrd 7).
