Technology Issue in Education
Introduction
As the 21st century is undoubtedly a century of technological inventions, aligning education with technology has become a great need. Whether an education institute is on a big or small level, the need to adopt technology is rapidly increasing with time. There is no doubt that the involvement of technology tends to help in a variety of ways, but it has also become an issue that needs to be given high importance (Çoklar, Ahmet, and Ißıl 22). The aim of this paper is to uncover the technological issues that impact education. Many students of the 21st century are apt at using technology and other tools. Understanding technology has become a great need, but digital innovations can undoubtedly be a cause of many problems in education. The paper discusses the aspects of technology that pertains to have become a major issue in education.
Upgradation and Cost
As technology is rapidly being changed with time, it has become a major need for all educational institutes to embrace the change and keep up with it (Gitelman, Kozhevnikov, and Sandler 102). When there are some advancements in technology, it requires up-gradation which is often costly. Therefore, for an educational institute that has fewer resources, it may become a burden to handle the costs of new equipment. The majority of the classrooms contain enough students who need to access the internet through their tablets or the internet. Likewise, there is also a major issue to teach students the proper way of using the new digital media which sums up to another cost factor (Kennedy, Michael and Boyle 89). Apart from this, it requires active IT staff which can sort out the issues within minutes. If a student has to complete his/her homework by using a tablet/laptop. In that particular scenario, his/her parents may not be able to help due to a lack of understanding or knowledge about the new equipment or software.
Diverse Social Dynamics
Whether the technology is advanced or older, it tends to add complexity to a number of things. The best examples in such a scenario would be budgets, learning, teaching, support, etc. Considering modern technology, digital citizenship, footprint, and privacy are quite important to be learned. In a number of educational institutes, there have been introduced new approaches such as eLearning. The matter of fact is that eLearning may do not offer the same social benefits of a regular educational institute (Tondeur 555). Approaches like eLearning may look an easy and good approach to sit at home and study, but it has many negative impacts as well. Such approaches are creating a barrier between students. Without classrooms, the students may never form relationships and friendships with their peers. If students do not have a face-to-face interaction with the teacher, they may ultimately take the classes less seriously (Tondeur 558). In a nutshell, it can simply be assumed that a student may not be able to learn the same social cues as a regular student. Such students are not able to communicate properly and are not socially active as the ones who attend regular classes. There is a high need to understand that professional life is totally different in which the individuals have to lively interact with their co-workers. For this, a strong communication and understanding set of skills is required (Yadav 210).
Distraction
Although, technology has helped students a lot in understanding their core subjects with an easy-to-understandable approached, however, it can also become a source of distraction. A common belief of the majority of teachers is that the tablets and smartphones with text messaging services and internet connectivity can distract students. In simple words, these aspects of technology can make the technology as a less-effective and more-distracting tool for education. It may undoubtedly be not an easy task for teachers to monitor students so closely in classes as for determining whether they do browse social apps or utilize the educational apps (Gonzales, Amy, Jessica, Calarco, and Teresa 101). Due to this, it has become a great need for a teacher to decide whether to use filtered browsing on smartphones/tablets that are brought by the students. However, if a teacher does use such an approach, it will not be a good option if the students own the device. There are many cases in which students are being caught using their tablets in classrooms, but not for educational purposes. Due to this, there is a high need to make the student understand that using technology in the right way will help them to reach a great level of success.
