The Problem and the Conclusion
The Problem
It is common knowledge that the amount of high-fat diets that people eat has a direct impact on their weight. If you consume the same amount of calories that the body requires over time, the weight is stabilized. If you take in more high-fat food than the body should take, the weight goes up. And if you take less, the weight reduces.
The consumption of a high-fat diet may lead to obesity. This refers to a condition of having a high Body Mass Index. This means that one might be carrying excess weight than is expected with his height. In the USA, approximately 2.5 million adolescents and children between the age of 2-19 years old are categorized as obese (Ogden et al, pp 2292-2299).
The consumption of a high-fat diet has also been perceived to be dangerous by some schools of thought while others perceive that it enhances mental performance, enhances energy, and loss of weight. A high-fat is thought to be detrimental to the cardiovascular health and overall health when high amounts of foods with saturated fat are consumed. High-fat diet also puts people at risk of chronic conditions like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease especially heart attack. Cases of a heart attack may become more prevalent among obese or overweight people because they risk suffering from breathing difficulties, cardiovascular diseases could be prevalent because of hypertension, while diabetes can be easily be developed by overweight due to insulin resistance (Berciano & Ordovas, pp 738-747).
Also, low-fat diets have been thought as the key to a healthy weight and good health. Over the last three decades in the USA, the calories percentage from fats in people’s food has reduced while obesity has increased (Willet, pp 113): Melanson, pp 43). According to carefully done trials, low-fat diet does not make it easier to lose weight compared to a high-or moderate-fat diet. And on the part of disease prevention, low-fat diets are thought not to have any special benefits.
One of the problems with a low-fat diet is that they are usually high in carbohydrates, especially the sources that can are categorized as rapidly digested sources, like white rice and white bread (Giaco et al pp, 336-341). And again, such kinds of food increase the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and weight gain. However, in the short-term, higher protein and lower carbohydrate low-fat diets may on the other side have weight loss advantages, and when it comes to preventing chronic diseases like obesity, the quantity, and quality of low-fat carbohydrates taken matter.
Both low-fat and high-fat diets have their advantages and disadvantages. It is therefore important to strike a balance or draw a plan on how one can eat such that he or she avoids being overweight or underweight such that the BMI index is way above the limit or too low below the expected index (Nutall, pp 117).
Also, adhering to portion size will help in maintaining the desired weight. According to (Nielsen, pp 3), portion size increases the amount of food eaten both at home and away, in children and adults alike. Research shows that when people are served large portions, they tend to eat more. This implies that large portion sizes may increase the chances of obesity or overweight. Therefore, for manageable weight control, people should therefore serve small manageable portion sizes of food to minimize the chances of overeating.
Conclusion
Keeping one’s weight in check is determined by the ability to keep to a healthy diet that is devoid of the high-fat diet. For better health, the kind of food people eat is more important than the amount taken in. This is because certain foods contain high-fat and are of low quality hence may ...
