Communication between the Sexes: Do Men and Women Have Different Approaches?
Effective communication is essential among people for there to be complete harmony and productivity. However, there are possible barriers to achieving effective communication between the sexes. Possible barriers include the different communication approaches that occur between men and women. These differences are primarily psychological and can affect society negatively (Merchant 16). Identifying and understanding these differences can help both parties interact and communicate effectively and avoid future conflict. Women exhibit a more cooperation-based communication approach than men. Discussed below are some of the different communication approaches between male and female genders.
Occurring as a significant difference is, women communicate intending to establish a relationship by looking for common points of interest and a means of connection. In contrast, men’s communication is more driven towards achieving a particular goal. This means that the way women speak is more likely to result in cooperation. Research based on gender differences has depicted that as women communicate to improve social interactions and form relationships, men, on the other hand, use it to portray dominance and get tangible results (Merchant 17). Women’s ability to easily establish social relationships, especially among themselves, gives them an upper hand at achieving cooperation, compared to their male counterparts, who are more focused on dominance and leadership.
Another difference is how men and women respond to stress or approach a problem. When women encounter a tackling situation, they tend to seek help by talking about the issue, resulting in a possible solution. Men tend to isolate themselves to try and tackle the problem alone, which implies that women are more collaborative in their communication.
