Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are some of the common problems facing different nations in the world. The problems associated with the abuse include distortions in thinking and addiction among others. Numerous medical, social and family issues are linked to alcohol, and the family members are at risk of getting problems (Moss 3). The challenge affects not only the alcoholic but also those that live around them. Alcohol has both positive and negative outcomes, but majorly negative. While it has several health benefits, heavy drinking has a serious of severe health problems. The essay seeks to discuss the economic and social effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.

Alcoholics cannot work well under the influence of alcohol, and this cuts down the productivity of an institution because low productivity translates to reduced profits and proceedings. Alcohol consumption is also linked to several short-term effects including lack of coordination, memory lapses, and vision impairment (Cook and Moore). Due to such effects, an abuser cannot conduct their duties as required and instead, end up becoming a burden to the company. Drinking also impairs how an individual performs their duties as a parent, and how they contribute to the functioning of the household. A large number of alcoholics began to drink at a very young age. It was established that under aged children and teenagers become prone to drinking at an early age, which is often due to consumption patterns at a premature age and their exposure to advertisements (Cook and Moore). The occurrence ends up interfering with the development of the children. The stunted development of the young generation influences the future ability of the state to respond to challenges in their economy.
