Police Officers – Our Daily Real-life Heroes
Movie enthusiasts have seen and watched films about people who can fly, shoot webs from their fingers, or run faster than the speed of light and think they are heroes. In some films, men and women with supernatural abilities go in at critical moments to save the day. Because movies depict different aspects of a hero, many people wonder what makes a hero. Is it superman like powers? Or is it saving people from tragedies? From an individual viewpoint, a hero is someone who has loyalty, integrity, and honor. A hero is also someone willing to put their life on the line for someone else or do everything they can to help save someone. Police officers are among the people considered to be real-world's heroes. They are guided by loyalty, integrity, and honor. Most importantly, they respond the earliest to the tragedies and crime scenes to protect people from danger. These individuals also embody the heroes present in popular culture.
Several factors indicate that cops are true modern-day heroes. First, they have integrity and honor. Police officers are people who are selected based on physical abilities and moral uprightness. This moral uprightness is the principle that guides cops while protecting others. Because of integrity, police officers have a more outstanding personal commitment to ethical values, standards, and self-schemas that help them resist the temptation of illegal activities (Westmarland, 160). Officers with these virtues always abide by the law and ensure they do not practice any act of dishonesty such as corruption (Westmarland, 153). Honor in cops also shows that they are real-world heroes. Police officers are people who will not give their integrity and loyalty to the people in exchange for something. This is a core principle in their ranks. They understand that losing their honor means causing grave injustice to those who depend upon them.
Second, police officers are loyal to their country and their constituents. They are heroes who sacrifice to maintain peace and order every day, regardless of who is causing it. That shiny badge clipped on a cop's uniform symbolizes loyalty. Officers pledge their allegiance when they take an Oath of Honor. They promise not to betray their profession, character, integrity, and public trust (Westmarland, 155). Thus, whether it be a simple citizen or a powerful official, police officers have the responsibility of bringing them into the custody of the law.
Third, police display bravery and selflessness while delivering service. These attributes are the most significant and recognizable in heroes. Police are always not afraid to face fear because they show a high confidence level. It takes skill and self-confidence to rush into a place where others fear to tread. As first responders, police feel confident in themselves and their abilities to overcome fear. When faced with a crisis, they believe that they can handle the challenge and achieve success regardless of the odds.
Law enforcement is one of the most stressful and dangerous careers. It requires bravery and selflessness because officers must beat all the odds to keep the world safe regardless of the hostility of the environment. They risk their lives to encounter dangerous criminals like murderers, drug dealers, and armed robbers (The Albuquerque Tribune, 1). When these criminals confront them with violent aggression, officers respond according to the rules and guidelines. They chase the criminals and fight back to contain the situation. The fact that cops are willing to lay down their lives engaging dangerous people is a selfless condition, which indicates a heroic act. In this case, police officers are true heroes because they risk their lives to stop criminal activities that interfere with society's peace.
Stopping dangerous criminals or putting them behind bars means reducing crime rates ...
