For your Second Research Paper, you will need to identify the content of narratives in three artworks and analyze how each artist used narrative to communicate social, political, or religious meaning.
You must research, using at least three sources, the time periods, artists, and artworks that you select in order to create well-founded connections between your selected artists’ stylistic and material choices and the societies in which they worked.
Choose three narrative artworks from artists or civilizations that we’ve studied. Write a 2 page research paper in which you research and explain the subjects in each work and then analyze how the story communicates social, political, or religious meaning specific to the period. Three of the works must be from a historical civilization that we studied so far this semester. Please include images of the artworks you want to compare. Remember to consider your thesis statement as it relates the the choices you have made.

Political, Social and Religious Meanings in different Sculptors of David
Over the years, various artists have used their skills and expertise to portray and highlight different societal issues through their artworks. Popular belief is that artworks are primary meant for aesthetic purposes because they are not only captivating but eye-catching. However, most artists have been known to convey certain messages through their pieces and in some cases it is only after close scrutiny that they can be understood. It is in this regard that pictures and images have been equated to a thousand words. Artworks are said to communicate or harbor not only social and political but also religious meanings for specific periods and art movements. The paper will examine three artworks of David in the Roman, Renaissance and Baroque art movements with emphasis on the social, political and religious meanings attached to them.
The first artwork that will be examined is the statue/ sculpture of David. It is considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance art movement and developed by renowned Italian artist Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. The work of art harbored different meanings. To begin, it was politically significant because of the heroic figure of David. It is shared that it symbolized or rather reflected the defense of civil liberties. Janson et al. (1940) reiterate this position and shares “the statue soon came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family” (p.31). According to the image of the sculpture below, David is seen to in a warning glare to all people who harassed the disadvantaged in society. Secondly, from a social perspective, the sculpture symbolizes not only strength but also youthful beauty. Thirdly, the sculpture also conveys a religious message pertaining to the artist’s dissatisfaction with the Judaic practice of circumcision. It can be vividly seen that there is foreskin on David’s penis which is contrary to the teachings in the bible. According to Jewish culture, circumcision signifies faith in God. As such, the showcasing of foreskin on David who is utterly significant in Judaism can be construed as Michelangelo’s displeasure with the practice.
