Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936 to 1938 is a biographical collection of autobiographical stories by former slaves that were collected from 1938-1928. There are thousands of interviews in the collection that offers people a panoramic view of slave experiences. The slaves were no fewer people, they had similar desires like those of whites. John W. Fields noted that they had “…a great desire to be able to read and write.” With this desire, they were very zealous with every opportunity that presented itself. While they wanted to learn, the Planters treated them harshly whenever they were seen reading or writing. There were laws established prohibiting white people to teach negroes.
Another former slave, Sarah Frances Shaw Graves, noted that they were sold like horse and mule. They worked in the plantations without getting any wages. The man hiring the slave paid the master. The negro families were separated without regard for their welfare. The narrat...
