Cancer is one of the most vicious diseases ever to afflict mankind. It comes about as a result of the malfunctioning of the body cells, which result in their rapid growth or multiplication. Among the most common of its forms it breast cancer. Breast cancer can be defined as cancer that develops its cells in the breast. The cells in the breast grow out of control. The disease can come up in any part of the chest. In most cases, the abnormal growth of the cells starts from the milk-producing ducts. A healthy breast is divided into three major sections. They include; ducts that act as the medium of transport for the milk from the lobules to the nipples, lobules that produce the milk, and finally, the connective tissues, which is the outer part holding together everything else. The cells may develop and start spreading to the unaffected parts of the breast or even other body parts.
Different kinds of breast cancer can affect a person. Breast cancer can occur in women but it rarely affects man. There are various types of breast cancer. Some of these types include ductal carcinoma in site, metastatic breast cancer, triple negative breast cancer, and invasive ductal carcinoma inflammatory breast cancer. First, there is invasive ductal carcinoma; it affects the parts of the breast or even metastasize to other parts of the body through the blood vessels and lymph vessels. This kind of cancer develops on the exterior parts of the ducts spreading to other tissues of the breast. The second kind of cancer is called invasive lobular carcinoma. As the name suggests, it starts from the lobules and then spreads to the tissues that are near it. Just like the other one, it can also spread to other parts of the body. There are many causes of these type of cancer some of them include; age, genes, alcohol consumption, exposure to ration, dense breast tissue and body weight
Breast cancer is very common among the American women. Studies show that there sre over 3.5 million survivors of breast cancer in the United States of America. In very woman is always diagnosed with breast cancer in the country. Female breast cancer represents 15% of cancer cases in the United States. Studies also show that one out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. For example this year approximately 41, 760 women have died from breast cancer in the United States. Additionally, 62% of those women who are diagnosed with the disease are diagnosed at a localized stage (Radi, Sahar Mahmoud). This stage has a 5-year survival rate. World Health Organization asserts that cancer is a global burden. This is disease that has claimed the lives of hundreds of women every year. However, in the past few years doctors have been able to come up with prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause. With this therapy, cases of breast cancers are gradually decreasing among women who are fifty years and above (Latifi, Masoomeh, et al). Increased awareness, improved treatment services, early detection, and better screening have contributed to the reduction of breast cancer among women.
Breast cancer comes with so many other changes in the patient’s body. The changes might be physical or even psychological. One of the psychological effects is depression. Some of the observable changes include; swelling in the breast, the nipple or breast having a different shape or a different texture in that it starts feeling different, blood might also come out of the nipple or even other forms of discharges that are not milk (Radi, Sahar Mahmoud). One may also experience pain on the nipple and the breast, causing discomfort. The skin color around the affected parts may turn their color to some redness, which is different from the other healthy parts. The whole breast might also swell.
Just like any other disease, breast cancer can be treated. To tackle breast cancer, a collective effort from various medical and physical aspects need to be used, since it is a multidisciplinary disease. This basically means that it calls for efforts from the fields of oncology, physical exercise or physiology, psychology as well as nutrition and dietetics. In addition, there will also be some contribution from the field of surgery and radiology (Bezerra, Indara Cavalcante, et al). The type and mode of treatment vary depending on the stage of cancer. The later the stage, the more complex ways of treatment or management of the disease. Psychological care is quite important too, since the disease usually tends to affect the patients mentally. The bottom-line in this case, is to give hope and belief to the patients that they will pull through.
