The Challenges of Remote/Online Education

Incorporate the following into well-organized paragraphs: An introduction to the overall sociological focus of your project or research, noting the specific social change topic and overall thesis of the cause of this social change; A description of your research methodology and a review of the relevance and appropriateness of your sources (note that these need to be academic sources); Proper citations of your outside sources and our course materials; A summary of the social context and sociological conditions that exist (or existed) for this social change to occur, integrating relevant data, concepts, and theories from course materials and your research to analyze the causes of this change; An analysis of the significant consequences of the social change that you have studied with a comparison of the impacts on diverse groups of people, using as many applicable sociological concepts and theories as relevant to explain why these trends are relevant; A concluding paragraph that identifies the outcomes of your research. Do not simply restate nor summarize your findings and do not add in new data or research in your conclusion. Focus on the broader sociological significance of your analysis. Whether you have done community-based learning or traditional research, the term paper requires: Use and cite both of our course textbooks, in addition to your field research or outside research sources, to demonstrate your research method and information literacy. Apply relevant concepts and theories from your readings to demonstrate your understanding of course material. Analyze your social change topic, with a clear explanation of the sociological relevance of the social change issue you have participated in or studied rather than just describing the history of the issue or a description of your service-learning activities. Use an academic-writing style: avoid conversational styles; do not use any swear words, slang, nor contractions; and make sure to correct all typos and spelling errors. Such errors will be reflected in your grade. Note that I am not able to read drafts of papers, but we can discuss core questions. Review the Grading Rubric below, to check on all required term paper elements. Follow these structural guidelines: No need for a title page. If you wish to have a title, put it at the beginning of your essay. Please do not include any personally identifying information in the assignment (your name, my name, the course number, or the CRN). Our sociology program will be participating in a college-wide assessment this year and this assignment may be collected and scored as part of PCC's work to learn more about student achievement of General Education outcomes. So, we want to have your paper be anonymous. Do not worry about including your name as part of the assignment, since Brightspace gives me all of that information already! Save your assignment as a Word document if possible; PDFs are acceptable but Word docs are easier for possible anonymized scoring. Write a maximum of 5 pages, in 12-point font (such as Times New Roman), with double-spacing and one-inch margins (do not mess with these to shorten or lengthen your paper); Include a bibliography at the end of your paper, with full citations. Do not have a separate bibliography page. Just put at the end of your essay. Cite sources, using the proper sociological (ASA) format. For direct quotes in your paper, use the following style at the end of the sentence (Solnit 2010:164), or for general references (Solnit, 2010). Cite the complete citation at the end of the paper in a bibliography, such as: Solnit, R. 2010. A paradise built in hell: the extraordinary communities that arise in disaster, New York, NY: Penguin Books Do not use footnotes. Websites are acceptable only if they are professional sites with research data and academic sources, such as on-line articles and cite properly in your bibliography, as you would for an article or book. Opinion sites, newspapers, magazine articles, and encyclopedias (e.g., Wikipedia) do not count. Reference the organization or author of the website material at the end of the sentence (e.g., City Repair 2010). Do NOT put the website in the body of the paper. In the bibliography, you need to cite all of the information about the site, as in a standard paper citation, as well as provide the web site at the end of your citation.
