Introduction
In most of the studies and pieces of literature dedicated towards the study of terrorism and the external factors behind it, one of the most thematic commonality is that this phenomenon is almost always targeted to sway political agenda. In other words, it is a commonly held belief that terrorist acts happen because a particular group wants to influence the social and political decision making of the state. This then implies the idea that terrorist groups highly believe that they could indeed sway these decisions towards their own wants, which is also the cause as to why they continuously do it and why other groups emerge (Weaver, Silverman, and Shin). Nonetheless, while this article would not go deeper into the debate as to whether all of these groups believe that their acts of violence would help achieve their goal or not, the author would focus more on the analysis of the article written by Mickolus. In his article entitled, Disorder in the new world order? The future of terrorism, he analyzed the potentiality of terrorist acts to actually influence political decision making. In the end, he was able to conclude that despite any and all efforts done by these rogue groups, “Terrorism will not fundamentally change the direction of the new world order”. Following from this, the author of this article believes that the rhetorics used in the article is sufficient enough (because of its appeal to Ethos, Pathos, and Logos) to be able to convince its readers that terrorism is insignificant in shaping the NWO as we experience right now. The next section would discuss the validity of his methods and analysis, in relation to its power of persuasion. After this, he would also conduct an analysis based on the emotions that are being conveyed in the article which also increases its appeal to rhetorics.
Ethos – The appeal to Character
One of the main reasons why Mickolus’ article is easily believable is because of his personal and professional credibility as well as the conduits on which his publications are disseminated. At first glance, it could be seen that most of publication are either a scholarly article or a book, which are deeply rooted on the analysis previously done studies on the subject matter of terrorism and international relations. Aside from this, he himself is widely known for his academic and career background as well as the the number of books (more than 10) and publications that he has written (Goodreads.com). Lastly, what adds to his credibility is the fact that of most of his publications are not only disseminated through academics databases, but also through popular media outlets such as mass and social media. In line with this, and the idea of Aristotle’s Ethos, the author of this paper believes that Mickolus’ credibility significantly adds to the rhetorics of his own works.
Pathos – The appeal to Emotion
