What is Cyber Bullying?
When people were happy about the benefits that the advanced technology has brought, no one ever thought of cyber bullying and how harmful it can be. Different organizations and scholars have tried to define this phenomenon based on how they understand it. The most intriguing definition is that of stopcyberbullying.com which describes cyber bullying as “when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by child, preteen or teen using the internet, interactive and digital technologies, or mobile phones.” Cyber bullying occurs mostly among the young generations and when adults get involved it becomes cyber harassment. Generally cyber bullying is directed to a specific individual causing repeated harm. Some teenagers have committed suicide because they have been cyberbullied an example is Megan Meier’s 2006 case where she was cyberbullied through MySpace. Teenagers are the ones who are mostly affected since they are in a fragile state of their life.
Teenagers utilize the technology to threaten, humiliate and harass their peers. For instance, they can send incredibly hurtful messages to others or even go to the extent of spreading rumors using smartphones (Agatston 59). Additionally, they create web pages, funny videos, and profile on the most popular social media platforms and use them to make fun and humiliate others. There are some instances where adolescent will take pictures in places where privacy should be observed, and when such pictures leak online, they may feel humiliated and embarrassed.
Cyber bullying has gone to the extent of people uploading unauthorized videos on social media platforms and invite people to like, tag, rate and place their comments. Besides, the social media some anonymous applications, especially on gaming networks, may play a crucial role in tearing down and humiliating other students (Agatston 59). This paper will be majorly focusing on the impacts of cyberbullying. What happens to those children who are affected by cyberbullying? Also, it will discuss whether there is legislative about the culprit of cyber bullying. It is important for school managements to understand the definition of cyberbullying and its adverse consequences. Additionally, they should establish measures on how to regulate the high rate of cyber bullying among the teenagers in their schools.
Places where Cyber Bullying Commonly Happens
Cyberbullying usually occurs in several mediums of cyberspace and a variety of venues. It is not a surprise that it occurs mainly where teenagers are located. Previously, teenagers used to hang out in chat rooms and therefore, much harassment would take place in those locations. In the recent years, youths meet and interact with social media, for instance, Snap chat, twitters, and Instagram. Also, the most popular video sharing sites YouTube (Bonanno 685). The rise in the usage of social media platforms has consequently led to the pace of cyber bullying going high and many cases been reported regarding the same. Basically, textual chat, voice chat, and texting via smartphones and tablets create environments where harm and hate can easily be expressed. Similarly, the portable gaming devices are propagating the same vice of cyber bullying.
All the 3-D virtual worlds and the gaming sites facilitate the act of cyber bullying. The problem with social media platforms is, once a negative message has reached people, it is tough to convince them that were a mistake and it was not true. Therefore, the perception of thousands of individuals changes within a click of a message or touch of the screen (Bonanno 685). It is necessary to not that cyber bullying when a person repeatedly mocks or makes fun of another online or repeatedly picks up on them through messages or emails. About 25% of youths according to a research claimed to have been cyberbullied following the given definition of cyberbullying. Therefore, since we have established that cyberbullying takes place where there are students, then we can confidently say that the act is rampantly exercised in schools.
The Impact of Cyber Bullying
Cyberbullying has many detrimental results that affect the victims of the act. According to studies, most targets report problems of depression. Because it occurs among the teenagers and this is the age that they considerably fight with the identity crisis. They do all they can to fit with their peers, and so when humiliated through cyberbullying, they are hurt both mentally and physically.
