Communication and management are two of the most significant aspects that determine the success or failure of any business or marketing strategy. Even though communication and management are two different entities, they are largely related and sometimes none of them can exist without the other. Successful implementation of the two within a business environment facilitates overall success. It is worth defining the two terms separately and examine at the effects, relevance, and consequences they have in running and marketing of a business or organization.
Communication is the act of sharing and passing of information, which is an important aspect in a business environment and society. In a business surrounding, communication enables feedback and passing of information along the chains of command that helps in the day-to-day running of businesses. It can be divided into three main categories that include vertical communication, which is the upward or downward flow of information along the communication chain, which includes the management and the working staff. Horizontal communication is the second category that involves communication among same level staff members, which generally involves staff members of the same department and finally, Grapevine communication, characterized by multidirectional flow of information with no prescribed directional flow (Tripathi 26).
Successful communication is normally characterized by certain attributes. Everyone involved, for example, must always know communication channels, they should be direct, and short enough without any compromise, and the personnel entitled with passing of information should be competent and clear to ensure effective communication (Walker 35). Furthermore, formal lines of communication should be used with mechanisms to authenticate information that may at times lead to miscommunication or even message corruption. Finally, communication should be taken as two-way traffic. This helps in preventing monotony and ensures everyone gets to share and chip-in constructive ideas. Communication involves speaking and listening, passing and receiving of information, which ensures those communicating, are on the same page.
There are several roles that communication plays in an organization environment, and which are essential towards realization of goals and maximization of profits. It acts as a tool for transmitting information, ideas, thoughts, and even opinions. Communication also helps in building and nurturing of relationships among employees, management, and even clients. Communication also ensures effective elaboration of company policies, goals, and vision. When information flows from either employees or clients towards the management, facilitates feedback mechanism that the management utilizes in perfecting and improving their products or services (Bell & Smith 35). Furthermore, communication has always been the most significant aspect in marketing, with the appropriate and relevant communication skills, interaction with clients and even potential customers become possible.

However, with the improvement in technology in internet connectivity and social networking, communication methods have had to evolve also. This is very evident in modern ways of communication that involve e-mails, video conferencing, texting and other related communication methods. Nowadays, communication and linking with other business partners is simple, and this comes with minimal faults and disconnection (Tripathi 69). This has greatly improved transactions and running of companies and organizations.
Reflecting on research, management defines the aspect of business that deals with planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling of operations within the business environment. The management is generally responsible for assembling personnel and leading them in accomplishing desired goals and objectives in an efficient and effective way while utilizing the available resources. In a normal organization or business structure, the management is sometimes divided into three levels. They comprise of the Top-level management team that includes the board of directors, company presidents, and vice-presidents and finally the C.E.Os. The second level is known as the Middle-level management, comprising of general, branch, and departmental managers. The third level includes supervisors, supervisors and other related managerial levels. The two bottom levels are normally responsible for implementing directives and policies from the top-level management team (Walker 79).
The Management section is generally entitled with three main roles: interpersonal, informational and decision roles. Interpersonal role involves general communication; provide the leadership structure, liaison role by acting as a link between the business and their clients and finally acting as the figurehead of the organization and attending to visitors among other roles. Informational role, on the other hand, deals with monitoring of operations, dissemination, which is the role of distributing of information and holding meetings and finally, they act as the representatives and spokespersons of the organization. The third role performed by the management is the decision rule (Bell & Smith 92). This deals with conflict handling and negotiation, effective resource handling and entrepreneurial decisions of the company. This role is the most significant as it deals with strategic business operations which relates to ways of increasing company profits, exploration of new markets, innovation of new products and services and other related ideas.
Being the cornerstone and backbone of the of company structure, the management is definitely a sensitive part of an organization. Selecting the most qualified to take the managerial positions helps propel the company or organization to prosperity. A good managerial team must always have certain attributes. A hardworking management team will always ensure tasks are carried out efficiently and effectively. Being open-minded and ready to consider suggestions from other members and even the subordinate group ensures the best possible solutions are considered, and whenever the management fails, they are ready to be corrected (Tripathi 181).
The management also needs to be good and swift decision makers. Sometimes matters may fall out of hand, and fast decisions need to be made to counter the problem. A swift managerial team guarantees fast decision making without compromising of the quality of decisions made. One of the entrepreneurial skills expected from the management is always creativity and innovation. This helps put the company above their competitors with new and better products always being provided. Innovation also helps in acquiring new markets for their products and offers variety to their already existing customers.
For effective management, the team must always foster good relations with their subordinate group. A successful business always requires maximum input from all departments, whether managerial and subordinate. This also goes hand-in-hand with motivation of lower and the rest subordinate team. Motivation has always been seen as the drive to getting the most out of an individual (Bell & Smith 165). This can be implemented in different ways such as awarding and promoting the best performing staff. The other important characteristic is time management. This is very critical and can determine the success or failure of a business by lack of meeting demands in time. Finally, the management team and any given time must always provide the aspect of continuity. This is especially relevant when it comes to change of guard and replacement of the governing team (Walker 148). This can be done by constantly educating and improving the skills of the lower-level teams and preparing them whenever they are to take over the running of the company.
A combination of communication and management within a business environment, therefore, ensures an all rounded solution to the success of any business. Noteworthy, this must be done in the most appropriate and convenient way to ensure all aspects of the organization work in harmony with each other. Lack of either one of them may lead to failure or even collapse of some department that may collectively lead to the failure of the entire business. Taking away communication may lead to misunderstanding and effective understanding of staff expectations and obligations or even ruin relationships. Likewise taking away the management may hinder effective running of the company and further cause conflicts with lack of any leadership structure to ensure control and governing of the company.
