Introduction
Career prospects, also job opportunities, are likely potentials within which people with qualifications in some areas can get jobs or chances to develop their careers. A career is a form of occupation that a person undertakes for a period of time that presents them with opportunities for them to progress. It generally involves the jobs that a person undertakes and other forms of occupations. They can, therefore, be defined as occupation opportunities that a person or people with qualifications in any given field have chances to get jobs and also develop their careers.
It is of great importance to study career prospects since it gives individuals a chance to explore what they want before settling on any given career. In most cases, people pursue a course with hopes that they will present them with opportunities for getting jobs and also chances to develop themselves as individuals. Another reason for researching on these opportunities is that it opens up the mind of an individual on how they view careers.
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Ecology
It is a field of scientific study which studies the various processes that influence the abundance of organisms and the nature in which they are distributed. It also studies the ways in which organisms interact amongst themselves and how they transform. It is a scientific study that concentrates its biological and physical sciences where it tries to relate biological factors to physical factors so as to draw a conclusion on why things are the way they are. It was first defined in the mid-19th century by Ernst Haeckel who defined it as a study of how organisms relate to or with their environment (Bauman, et al. pp. 48-64). The study has evolved leading to it having three different definitions.
The first definition is that of Haeckel known as the Classical Haeckelian which still holds its emphasis on ecology being a study of organisms and their relationship with the environment. The definition holds the argument that organisms play the main role in the biotic world. The second definition is that by Andrewartha and Birch which like the Classical Haeckelian maintained the manifestation of organisms as core to the ecology study. However, despite being the biotic focus, the definition also identifies the effects of climatic fluctuations amongst other related environmental factors in its ecological study (Krebs, pp. 233-240). The third definition is that by Odum who viewed it as environmental biology. He defined it as a study which seeks to identify the way in which nature is structured and how it functions (Woodmansee, pp. 43-44). From these three definitions, it can be defined as a study of the nature in which nature is structured and how organisms, react, interact and respond to different changes.
Ecology has various areas of study which include; organism, ecosystem, population, and community. Study of organisms in ecosystems is targeted at understanding how they relate with each other and with the environment around them. The study of the ecosystem involves an understanding of the physical environment of organisms, how it changes and how the changes affect organisms. The study of population is targeted at understanding the abundance of organisms in a specific geographical location. The study of community involves studying different organisms living in a given geographical location.
Evolutionary Biology
Evolutionary biology is a branch of biology that focuses its study on the process of evolution that have led and lead to diversification of life on earth. The study is based on the evolutionary theories of a man has evolved over the years. The process for evolution as identified in this study are speciation, common descent, and natural selection. Researches in this study have widened the scope for this study where genetics, sexual selections, and biogeography are being studied in this subject.
Evolutionary biology is an important scientific study which plays a major role in the promoting of life (Marsit, et al. pp. 581). For example, in human health, evolutionary biology helps researchers to be a step ahead of disease-causing organisms, pathogens, by studying their evolutionary patterns hence they are able to predict how they will be in the future and cures or preventions are prepared in advance. It is also used in solving cases of hereditary diseases where researchers study how the genes that cause the diseases have evolved and this is used to find possible mitigations or cures for them.
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB)
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is an integration of the studies of ecology and evolutionary biology. EEB is a career path which focuses on understanding the relationships and interactions of biological factors. It is more concrete and an advanced study of both the concepts of ecology and evolutionary biology (Renault et al. pp. 292-315). EEB studies organisms which is a study of community in ecology involves studying different organisms living in a given geographical location, however, it views the studies from an evolutionary biology point of view. Generally, EEB can be defined as a career path that studies how different organisms have come to be, and how they live within a community in a given geographical area. Evolutionary biology makes the study of EEB interesting in that it brings out an explanation on the reason for the existence of diversity in living species. EEB opens up various career prospects for learners.
Career Prospects for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Taking Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as a major provides students with a vast selection of careers from which they can select what they want to do. Opportunities for these courses range across a wide scope of careers like teaching, medicine, management, biotechnology, consulting amongst other jobs. There are also many chances for career development where students are open for a wide variety from which they can study. Discussed in this chapter are some of the career prospects that learners taking this course as a major have.
* Career Development
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) as an area of study presents learners with a wide variety of career development opportunities. There is a wide variety of graduate courses that graduates from this course can choose from, both for their Masters (MS) and Ph.D. Graduate courses are offered in EEB schools, law schools, veterinary schools, education/teaching schools amongst other schools. The field of study presents various aspects in the job market which require added knowledge for people in this field to be able to function fully. For example, a graduate from this course cannot practice medicine, yet the study in this course has various medical factors that can be used to promote health. To enable practitioners to practice medicine, graduates from this case can take graduate causes in medicine so as to enable them to practice more on human health (Reyers, et al. pp. 7362-7368). Also, medical practitioners can take graduate studies in this cause which will enhance their knowledge of disease-causing organisms, their nature and how they relate to the ecosystems and also how they have evolved over time. It will promote health-care provision. The course, therefore, offers career prospects on medici...
