Kelly grew up in California in a setting of a violent father who wanted to get her married at 19. The wedding occurred, but the husband went to work in Greece. As a result, she had to live in her in-law’s house. However, she was unhappy with the harassment she encountered from her parents. One day, Kelly walked to a shopping mall and met with a man who helped her escape from her in-laws. The two moved to live together in one of the towns of California. However, the man invited his two friends to the house. One of the gentlemen informed her that she would work for them as a prostitute. In reiteration, she protested and screamed while seeking help. At that point, one of the men took off his belt to beat her.
As a gang, the men locked her in the house and raped her repeatedly. On average, the men coerced her to have sex with about five men daily. She was warned that the men would kill her if she attempted to escape. One day, she found the door unlocked, which was an opportunity to escape. She boarded a coach station and returned to live in a stall near her hometown. Luckily, two women saw Kelly stranded and offered her a place to stay. However, the residence was only temporary since she left all her documents with the traffickers. She says, “I was scared to report my issue to the local authorities. I feared that they would send me back to my father’s house. They seemed insensitive when she informed the home office about her encounters away from home. They seemed not to believe me since they had such stories before. At some point, they said that I was not believable. Kelly affirmed that panic attacks and flashbacks could have affected her mental health.
Kelly suffered from severe mental health issues, which affected her psychological and physical well-being. Despite Kelly’s desire to attain a degree, she could not reach the set goals based on her condition. After a long struggle, Kelly decided to shift to Texas with the anticipation of studying for her undergraduate degree. She reckoned that finding accommodation and a job would be easier than it was in California. However, Kelly struggled to find a job after arriving in Texas. Consequently, she indulged in drugs and spent all her savings.
Kelly recalled a day when a matron ordered her to get out of her guest room due to payment arrears. At that point, Polly went to one of the towns and bumped into one of her drug dealers. The chance turned out to be life-changing. “He asked if I wanted to buy something, but I said no,” says Kelly. She added that it was drugs that had resulted in her current situation of suffering from mental health issues. The dealer reiterated that he would help her make some money. He said, “Let’s move around nightclubs and offer deals that would help us make money. You allow men to dance around you, and I will have a chance to sell some coke”. The two tried the deal but with little success. While Kelly’s dealer was chatting with someone else, another man approached her with a drink. She agreed, and after that, she found herself inside the first brothel.
Kelly decided to work as a prostitute to make a living while anticipating that she would get herself out of the situation and make a living. She met with the first client and made $20 for a night. She narrates that the man was super easy since he just wanted to touch and look at her. According to Kelly, the man seemed embarrassed being with her in such a compromising situation. Kelly was more comfortable being around the client than she was with the drug dealer who brought her to the brothel. However, she was uncertain if or not she could trust anyone but opted to remain at the brothel. At first, she would not attract many clients since she had not bought sexy lingerie and heels like her peers.
I asked Kelly about her first experience in the business and her interaction with her peers. She responded that facing rejection based on having the wrong outfits was cruel. She added, “sometimes you feel tired and like you have made enough for a night.” However, men have different preferences, and that man would always pick her. She recalled working in one place where all the girls were attractive, which demeaned her. I later asked about the men that used to visit, and she responded that most were between twenty-five and fifty years old. She added that most clients were middle-aged and in well-paying jobs. Notably, most of Kelly’s clients were affluent and used cocaine as a standard drug. Polly recalls, “most men would stay for hours and spend a lot of money without sexual demands. However, there was a possibility that some of them would turn aggressive.
Kelly narrated an episode of having an encounter with a coke-fiend client. According to Kelly, she encountered a guy who would take fifteen grams of cocaine in just two hours. One day, the client asked her to take some cocaine, to which Kelly agreed. However, she started sweating profusely while his heart was hammering after taking an overdose. As she tried to leave the room, the client locked the door. When the matron knocked to inform us that our time was up, he opened and paid for extra time. Kelly said that it was a terrible experience that caused her much discomfort. After the incident, she would visit hotels, fearing what would happen. I would always be scared of a gang-rape whenever I would be at a party.
Besides, I was susceptible to sexually transmitted since I would use condoms that would break at times. Kelly narrates that “I ended up contracting chlamydia. Notably, sexually transmitted illnesses are bound to happen from having frequent sex. Luckily, Texas offered frequent sexual health services that benefitted even the sex workers. After two months, Kelly realized that offering sex in exchange for money affected her attitude towards men and having a relationship. She sa...
