"Overview: This module gives you the opportunity to complete a significant action research report within your area of specialism of Management. In preparation for your pathway action research report, students are required to develop a research proposal. Assessment 2 of this module will follow on from this assessment, so you must choose an area which is aligned to Management. It is strongly suggested that you choose an area which is of interest to you given that you will be working on this area for a year. The key is to ensure that the focus is on Management practices and potential challenges/opportunities that might arise for the chosen company/industry .

Learning Outcomes to be met by the Assessment :

 Propose solutions to a range of complex and/or unpredictable problems that arise from management practice.

 Critically evaluate the impact of strategic decisions upon an organisation and its integrated practices.

 Demonstrate capacity for independent learning and self-directed development.

TASK: The research proposal enables you to identify a research question aligned with your Management pathway area. The research proposal requires you to ascertain the scope of your research, its aims, research question and objectives. It also includes a brief overview of key literature to help illuminate the research question and offers insights into primary or secondary evidence-based data collection methods, and timeline to prompt your thinking. The research proposal needs to be feasible and well-thought out since it will be executed in assessment 2.

Scope: You are on the Management pathway and so your research focus should be on topics from this area. Of course, you can refer to the outside influences of Marketing, Finance,Economics etc, but they shouldn’t be the focus. You need to demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of Management issues.

Independent Learning: This is an assessment that requires independent learning. This means that you are expected to research autonomously and with peers in order to make decisions e.g. it is up to you to research the various available theories and apply appropriate theory."

Technology is advancing in society today, and different organisations are embracing technological change. The presence of Artificial Intelligence and automation is evident in today's world, which has attracted debate across organisations globally about their impacts on institutions. Besides the debate, it has led to a global transformative whereby it is changing how individuals work in the organisation and reshaping the management of institutions. Traditionally, managers had roles and responsibilities such as human interaction, coordination and decision-making. They are changing to the point that machines are performing these tasks as opposed to the previous need of human beings to conduct the activities (Chowdhury, S., 2023, 88). The management changes have shaped the purpose of this research: to look into the impacts of AI and automation in the management capacity. Therefore, the objective of this research is to have an in-depth understanding of how these technologies influence managerial functions and responsibilities. Further, it will help decide how businesses have been impacted in their operation in this technology-changing world.
Interestingly, this research seeks to explore the far-reaching implications caused by Artificial Intelligence and automation. The main focus in this context is to examine how management roles are changing, either positively or negatively, when AI and automation are used in organisations. AI has made managers engage in decision-making faster and improved collaboration regarding resource allocation and determining the institution's needs. These are changes from the traditional human-centred approach (Chowdhury, S. 2023, 92). Even with these improvements, the human control and operation of the software are still needed for maximum results to be achieved. Today, businesses are recording that they can conduct these activities faster, and it has attracted more individuals, even the young ones, to be interested in management positions. The traditional tasks of management that were once considered exclusively conducted by human managers are being taken by automation and AI, including forecasting roles, data analysis processes, and strategic decision-making (Dash, R. 2019, 47). AI and automation, without doubt, are influencing the overall structure and management roles in organisations and propelling the embracing of management styles that are cross-functional and which allow collaboration.
Where there is technology implementation and use attracts new dynamics, challenges and opportunities. Therefore, the management section in organisations faces these issues while there are opportunities for improvement (Toorajipour, R. 2021, 509). It is argued that implementing AI and automation has benefited managers, making their tasks more efficient and actions data-driven (Dash, R. 2019, 49). The challenges that emerge from the technological implementation include ethical challenges in using technology, cases of adaptability as some individuals and organisations are not ready for the change and the establishment of new skills that will aid towards handling the technology and maintaining it for effective functioning (Wang, W. and Siau, K., 2019, 66). The findings of this research proposal will aid in addressing the identified critical challenges in AI and automation implementation for managers and provide good insight regarding how managers can embrace the change and work efficiently with automation. Managers should understand that technology is present not to cause harm but to improve their roles and performance in the business sector.
Today, the discussions on the internet are related to AI and automation. Therefore, conducting an in-depth analysis of the research topic will contribute immensely towards understanding and providing knowledge about the impacts of AI and automation in businesses and management practices. These results will also help motivate managers to embrace technological use in their practices, invest enough research towards the success of technology, and support diverse developmental strategies that allow managers to easily navigate the changing landscape of technological innovations.
Scope of the Research
The research will mainly focus on the following areas. The first will focus on Artificial Intelligence and automation's impacts on management roles and responsibilities. These are the managers in different industries. Consequently, the research will focus on determining how these technologies have a transformational impact or change in structures and hierarchies in institutions. The last point of focus in the research includes an assessment of the different challenges and opportunities which emerge because of AI and automation in organisations and management. This scope of research studies aims to find a guide on what the research will focus on and have specific data collection and findings for the study.
Aims and Objectives of the research
The study aims to explain how AI and automation are causing changes in management practices. Further, it provides insights into how managers can adapt to the changing managerial positions in terms of roles and responsibilities.
Objectives
1 The first objective is to determine and determine specific tasks and functions of AI in management.
2 Investigate how organisations and managers adapt to the changes in structure and implementation of AI and automation.
3 Identify the different challenges and opportunities managers face when using AI and automation during the process of decision-making.
4 Propose implementable strategies for the managers to successfully integrate AI and automation in the organisation.
Literature Review
The impact of automation and AI has shown the evolution and changes in the management roles in organisations. Today, emerging technologies such as automation and Artificial Intelligence continue to penetrate industries across the globe. As these developments permeate the industries, evolution happens because the management roles, which were once traditional actions, are slowly but gradually being changed (Raisch, S. and Krakowski, S., 2021, 197). Technology is taking over the actions, roles, and responsibilities once human-centred. It emerges that the evolution in the management sector is multifaceted, and managers have mixed reactions regarding how they are operating and how they are operating today in industries.
With the emergence of technology in management departments, one notable change is how it affects managers’ tasks. Initially, humans were doing the management tasks, but there have been changes to automation tasks in management positions. Technology, AI and automation are now handling these tasks, making managers' input towards the tasks small (Mohammed, I.A., 2021, 669). Since the automation of tasks has relieved some duties for the managers, they can then redirect their attention, energy and skills towards more specific aspects of the organisation, improving their management processes and better their management outcomes.
Another evolution to note in the advent of automation and AI is the development and prompting of data-driven decision-making. AI has an immense capability in data processing, and managers today are relying on AI to help in data processing for accuracy and efficiency (Fountaine, T. 2019, 67). Artificial Intelligence can analyse massive data sets and make decisions faster than the human brain could do it. Businesses are predicting future trends through data analysis by AI and automation of the process. The outcome of the data-driven decision-making process is not only for speeding the decision-making process but also promotes accuracy in the decision-making while streamlining the decision-making processes in the business.
Another evolution concept focused on implementing AI and automation is providing the power of forecasting in the organisation. The importance of forecasting in business is it allows these institutions to assess the current situation against the past and predict the future. It indicates where the business stands and its competitors and highlights segments that need improvement to improve business actions (Fountaine, T. 2019, 69). AI has algorithms in it which, upon analysis of data and comparisons, can aid in predicting future trends in accuracy. The prediction and accuracy are valuable in different departments of the organisation, such as the supply chain sector, and aid in financial planning. Managers depend on and use the forecasts from AI to make effective decisions and are more vital towards responding to the company or market environmental conditions.
Redefinition of organisational structure
The emergence of AI and automation has caused redefinition in the organisational structure of companies. Hierarchical changes are evident, and businesses today prefer a flatter organisational structure to a rigid one. The flatter organisational structure is gaining affiliations in organisations because of their ability to be flexible and adapt faster to the current digital age. In flatter organisational structures, what is clear is hierarchical structures are reduced to the minimum, which creates an advantage because decision-making is decentralised in the institution. Flatter organisation structures also have changed the communication structure of managers and prompted the use of direct communication and collaboration, which happens at the different sections of the department, hence a positive redefinition.
