Born in August 1786, David Davy Crockett is one of the most famous and renewed soldiers, frontiersmen, and politicians in the United States. Myths have always obscured his life, and even after his death, stories related to his political careers kept circulating on the internet. Davy Crockett is referred to as the King of the Wild Frontier, and he was forefront in the Texas Revolution. As an artist and folk hero, David gained tremendous popularity and fame due to his almanacs and stage play.
Davy Crockett’s father decided to send him to the school to begin his formal education as soon as possible. He was 13 years old at that time. Within a couple of days, Crockett got tired because one of his seniors bullied him. Owing to his attitude, arrogance and rebellious nature, Davy chose to take revenge and had beaten the senior up badly. Later on, he continued skipping the school to avoid punishments or physical harms, and when Davy Crockett’s dad came to know this, he got angry at the son, and this led David to run away from home and perform low-paying jobs for next few years. He spent a large part of his life in Tennessee and Maryland after his departure.
In the early years of his career, Davy Crockett tried everything from farming to preparing gunpowder and wooden barrels for some clients. However, nothing could give him as much money as he had wished for. Adventurous Crockett finally quit on all those low-paying jobs and became a professional hunter. It is believed that he had hunted over 100 bears in Tennessee during his life as a hunter. He used to kill bears on a regular basis to obtain their meat. He sold the bear meat and earned much money in a couple of months. He was also into preparing oil and pelts for the sake of money. If Davy’s biography is to be believed, he had not only killed bears but also other animals from 1825 to 1826. One of the most interesting stories about his life is that Crockett once stabbed the heart of a big bear with the help of a butcher knife.
In 1826, having served in the Tennessee legislature, David got a chance to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. In those days, he gained quick fame due to his free nature, active and sharp mind, and advocacy for the poor. He used to raise his voice in favor of the needy and against politicians who, according to David, had caused problems for common people and destroyed the economy of the country. Four years later, in 1830, Davy Crockett was given tough times due to his harsh comments about Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act. His feud with the President led David to lose the 1835 election.
It was one of the toughest times of his life, but David Davy Crockett did not give up and eventually made his name in Washington D.C., where he used to remain absent from the duty and was criticized for the negligence toward his work. During his time in the Congress, Davy could not impress anyone and had not passed a single bill in favor of his people. It proved that he was not as impressive and responsible politician as everyone considered. Despite his troubled career in the Congress, stories of several television shows, plays and movies got inspired by David’s life. For instance, in 1831, a play titled The Lion of the West amazed theatergoers whose story revolved around a fictitious congressman. Colonel Nimrod Wildfire, the main character of this play, represented Crockett and did all the things Davy had done throughout his life. Two years later, in 1833, a biography on his life was also published.
To anyone who does not know much about his personal and professional life, our suggestion is to go through the pages of the history to have an idea of how Davy Crockett fought for his survival and faced numerous problems. He had put many efforts into maintaining his wild and bold image, and that is evident from the fact that the artists and portraitists who wanted to make his sketches were given detailed instructions regarding how to do their work. Crockett once asked an artist to portray him rallying animals during the bear hunts. He then bought all of his works considering them a valuable asset of his life. Today, a lot of paintings and sketches of Davy Crockett can be seen on the internet, and are present in art museums.
You would be amazed to know that Davy had spent three months in Texas before his death. Soon after losing his last bid for the Congress, David decided to withdraw from his career in 1835 and chose to spend the rest of his life in Texas, along wit...
