Linux Operating System (OS)
Linux is basically an OS which could be downloaded for free since it is an open source, and it belongs to the whole community of developers, not a single corporation. A lot of small and large corporate entities prefer Linux OS not only because it can be installed and upgraded for free, but also owing to its dependability considering that it can work efficiently for several years, without having the need to reboot (Darrell, 2013). Moreover, since the source code is open, bugs could be fixed easily and fast without the customer having to wait for proprietary vendors to issue fixes on a schedule which actually suits them more than it does their customers. Companies also value Linux OS since it allows groups of corporate entities to work together on software issues and problems, without worrying about an anti-virus court case. Linux programs, in essence, could be installed on virtually any machine – even computers which are outdated and older – and provides business owners with a degree of flexibility that they would not find with the other OSs (Linux Foundation, 2014).
Installing a printer on Linux OS
Adding a printer to Linux operating system might seem rather different from other OSs. When the company is buying printers, Lexmark printers should be avoided given that these are known to have the worst compatibility with Linux OS. Nonetheless, networked printers are convenient and consist of printers on a wireless network which happen to be even more convenient (Darrell, 2013). Modern Linux OSs help in locating and adding networked printers with the use of utilities like (i) Ubuntu’s Printers configuration tool or using the (ii) Web browser-based CUPS printing server.
Installing printers using the Printers Configuration Tool
First Step: Launch the configuration tool – that is, the Printers configuration tool
Second Step: Click the Add button
Third Step: in the Devices panel, click Network Printers
Fourth Step: Click on Find Network Printer
