Thought Paper Assignment Student’s Name Institution Course # and Name Professor’s Name Submission Date Prison-Based Intervention Prior to researching, my thoughts and perceptions on prison-based intervention were based on personal opinions and documentaries that I have watched. Prison-based intervention rarely works because the prison system is not conducive to correct behavior. Numerous prisoners are transformed into hardened criminals rather than reformed citizens. The prison system is a man-eat-man environment; thus, the weak ones are taken advantage of. Prisoners have to be hardened emotionally in order to survive the prison system. According to numerous movies and documentaries, prisoners often relapse into criminal activities once they are out. Additionally, the prison system is made up of gangs based on race or social class, thus leading to more criminal activities. In essence, prison-based intervention leads to little or no reformation because the environment is not conducive to positive change. After the research, my thoughts and opinions have been transformed on the impact of the prison-based system on behavioral changes. According to Grady et al. (2023), the traumatic experiences that prison inmates have faced in life have significantly contributed to their behavior. In this vein, it is clear that the criminal activities convicts take part in can be attributed to the trauma they have faced. In addition, the researches reiterated that prison-based intervention promotes the well-being of those incarcerated through specific programs (Grandy et al., 2023). Prison-based intervention offers behavioral health intervention that is pivotal in spearheading prisoner changes. Behavioral health includes emotions that can affect the health of those incarcerated, such as life stressors and substance use disorders (American Medical Association, 2022). Trauma can be theorized as stressful experiences that are beyond one’s control (Mind.org, n.d). Based on these definitions, it is evident that prisoners grapple with traumatic experiences and behavioral health concerns that must be addressed. Additionally, the research has highlighted the impact of prison-based intervention on prisoners. Incarceration impacts the mental health of prisoners, which can hinder them from transforming positively (Grady et al., 2023). Prison-based intervention plays a crucial role when caring for inmates with trauma-based needs.
