For racially minoritized youth, these challenges are compounded by systemic racism and discrimination. These overlapping risk factors can interfere with academic achievement, emotional regulation, and behavior. Human service programs, such as after-school tutoring, mentoring, and culturally responsive counseling, aim to support these youth. This paper seeks to identify a research question related to the impact of human service programs on racially at-risk youth, explain the research idea, and select a dependent variable and three independent variables. Research Question and Explanation The central research question guiding this project is: How do human service programs influence racially at-risk youth's academic achievement, social-emotional development, and behavioral outcomes? This question focuses on measurable outcomes and aligns with the field of human services. It is suitable for an applied research focus, which aims to guide interventions, inform service planning, or evaluate support systems. According to the criteria outlined in Chapter 7, a good research question must be specific, feasible, relevant to practice, and grounded in observable evidence. This question meets those standards and can be explored through survey data collected from adults familiar with racially marginalized youth and their participation in such programs. Explanation of the Research Idea The research idea stems from the observation that many racially at-risk youth face structural disadvantages, including discriminatory treatment in schools, lack of access to culturally appropriate services, and racial profiling. Yet only some have access to meaningful interventions that address both their socio-economic and racialized experiences. The goal is to investigate how program participation affects youth development across three key areas: academic performance, emotional well-being, and behavioral patterns. Because the survey will be distributed to adult friends and family members rather than directly to the youth, respondents will be asked to share their perceptions and observations about the youth. These insights help assess whether and how human service programs make a measurable difference, particularly for youth who face racism and marginalization. Dependent Variable The dependent variable is Youth Outcomes, defined across three observable dimensions: 1 Academic Achievement – How the youth perform in school, including grades, homework completion, and classroom engagement. 2 Social-Emotional Development – Behaviours such as emotional regulation, confidence, and interpersonal skills. 3 Behavioral Outcomes – Incidents of misconduct, absenteeism, or risk behaviors such as skipping school or aggression.
