Research Proposal (15marks)
The qualitative research proposal sets out to probe the disparity between the modern day and old school parenting. The research will take a comparative approach whereby it will distinctly contrast attributes of modern parenting to that of old school parenting. The researcher will attempt to establish a relationship between parenting style and increase in youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy. A comparative discursive model will be used to guide the interview questions.
Introduction, Research Problem, Research Questions 3.Literature Review
The QRP will be divided into four key sections namely introduction, research problem, research questions and literature review.
Interview Guide
The interview guide was developed based on the interview guide worksheet tutorial. The completed interview guide sheet is attached in the Appendix section.
Part 1: Research Proposal
The research proposal has been prepared to guide a qualitative research process. The research questions worksheet has been reviewed alongside the lecture notes. The distinct research proposal questions have been identified and answered.
Introduction
The research proposal will guide a qualitative research process into establishing the relationship between parenting style, increase in youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy. Current research literature indicates a surge in youth delinquency as well as teenage pregnancy over the last decade. This alarming trend has prompted the need for a qualitative research. The comparative qualitative study will compare and contrast modern versus old school parenting.
Research Problem
Youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy are some of the most researched subjects in social sciences. In fact, statistics indicate a double digit increase in youth delinquency and youth pregnancy over the last three decades. This trend has generated research interest and many researchers have delved into inquiring the relationship between parenting style, youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy. Though research literature exists, few qualitative researchers have employed a comparative discursive approach. The research sets out to bridge the existing gap in comparative literature, and will use a structured interview model to collect data from the participants.
Research Questions
Primary Research question:
The disparity between modern and old school parenting is the primary cause of youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy
Other research Questions:
Q1: How would you compare old school to modern parenting on a scale of 1 to 10?
Q2: What are the disparities between old school and modern parenting that can cause youth delinquency?
Q3: What differences between old school and modern parenting can be linked to teenage pregnancy?
Q4: What can you say about the two styles of parenting?
Q5: Are you an old school or modern day parent?
Introduce the Goal of the Research:
The goal of the research is:
1 To establish the relationship between parenting style and increase in youth delinquency
2 To determine the link between parenting style and increase in teenage pregnancy
3 To compare and contrast old school and modern parenting and establish how each parenting model impacts on youth behavior
Define and justify the Basic Research Model being employed
The basic research model being employed is discursive comparative approach. The choice of the qualitative research model was largely informed by the research question. The research question required a research model that would compare and contrast modern-day and old school parenting with the view of establishing disparities that can be linked to youth delinquency and teenage preganancy.
Discuss the Problem.
Youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy have been found to be the leading causes of early school dropout. While preventive effort has been done, statistics have showed a recent surge in reported cases of teenage pregnancy. Research literature is inconclusive as to the exact cause of the surge, even though some researchers have attributed it to modern parenting style. Few scholarly journals and research papers have explored the subject of teenage pregnancy and its link to parenting style. However, there is scholarly concurrence that disparities in parenting style could impact youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy. Some researchers attribute it to the mechanics of modern day lifestyles which have sidestepped parenting. The rationale for the choice of the research topic is underpinned by the need to bridge the existing gap in the research literature. Still, the research explores a subject of critical importance in social science. The scope of the research will be guided by the following delimitations:
Delimitations of the study
The research literature on the subject of parenting, youth delinquency and teenage pr3eganancy is too much. Therefore, the research will be limited to only specific research studies that employed a comparative research model. The research will compare and contrast the two parenting styles, and will not attempt to study youth delinquency and teenage pregnancy. However, drawing from the existing literature, the research will attempt to link the change in the two research variables to parenting style disparities.
Analysis of Research Questions
The research questions were framed to adequately capture qualitative research data using discursive comparative research model. The study will employ a deductive approach where a number of sampled qualitative comparative research studies will be reviewed and analyzed to support the evidence derived from the interview. The research topic is parenting style. A semi-structured interview will be used to capture data from a randomly selected sample of old school and modern-day parents. The sample size will be 10, comprising of 5 old school and modern-day parents respectively. A stratified-random sampling strategy was used to purposively select participants with equal chance from each study group. The interviewees were given the interview script after singing a consent form. Find the interview script attached.
