Assignment Overview: This assignment is designed to prepare you for your final paper by engaging you in the process of understanding, analyzing, and addressing urban issues within the context of metropolitan planning and governance. By selecting a pertinent urban issue and applying critical theoretical frameworks, you will develop the foundation for your final research paper (second assignment). Task Description: Identifying Relevant Urban Issue: Begin by identifying an urban issue directly linked to existing modes of metropolitan planning and/or governance. This issue should hold personal significance or high societal relevance. Urban issues can span from the affordable housing crisis to Greenbelt plans, extractivism, Indigenous lands, pipeline expansion, or any other influential urban policy in a global metropolitan region. Formulating a Research Question: Select a topic that intrigues you and collaborate with your TA and peers well ahead of the due date to refine and formulate a clear research question. This question should succinctly capture the essence of the issue you are investigating. Developing a Critical Theoretical Framework: To delve deeply into the selected issue, construct a suitable critical theoretical framework. This framework will facilitate the examination of your research question through a critical theoretical lens. Reference course materials to identify pertinent critical theories or approaches that can be applied to analyze the chosen issue effectively. Exploring Multiple Critical Perspectives: Gain insights into the urban issue from two distinct critical perspectives, such as utilitarianism, Kantian, Rawlsian, communitarian, environmental, feminist urban theory, etc. These perspectives should be the most relevant to your chosen issue. Evaluate how these theoretical approaches can be employed to address the identified problem. Utilizing Substantial Sources: Your paper must be based on a minimum of 12 substantial sources. Among these, include at least 6 academic texts that were NOT part of the course materials - marks WILL be deducted otherwise. These academic sources should provide depth and rigor to your analysis. In addition to the academic texts, you can draw upon a variety of other materials, such as government and non-governmental organization reports, websites, newspaper or magazine articles, and literary sources (novels, poetry). These sources will enrich your understanding and provide context to your argument. Structuring the Research Paper: Based on your exploratory analysis, create a point-form outline that will serve as the base structure for your research paper (second assignment). Organize your thoughts and key findings, ensuring a logical flow of ideas. Assignment Guidelines: Word Limit: The word limit for this assignment is a minimum of 1000 words. Formatting: Ensure that your paper is double-spaced. Citation Style: Follow the APA citation style for referencing sources. By completing this assignment, you will not only lay the groundwork for your final paper but also gain a deeper understanding of how critical theoretical frameworks can illuminate urban issues within the context of metropolitan planning and governance. Your analysis will contribute to the discourse surrounding effective strategies for addressing complex urban challenges.

Exploring the Affordable Housing Crisis through Critical Theoretical Lenses Student Name Institution Professor Name Course Date Exploring the Affordable Housing Crisis through Critical Theoretical Lenses This paper focuses on the affordable housing problem as one of the current burning social questions of the urban areas in the global metropolitan territories. According to King et al. (2017), housing has become expensive over the years, and most people's wages have remained stagnant while the supply of affordable homes has remained very low. This crisis comes in different folds, and these are high rent costs, overcrowded units, poor living conditions, and increased vulnerability to homelessness (King et al., 2017). Due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and gentrification dynamics, the scarcity of affordable housing has widened the social inequalities and increased economic disparities within urban societies. Edwards (2016) argues that families and individuals have to sacrifice one basic need to afford shelter: health care, education, or even food. This research paper aims to analyze the affordable housing crisis through the lens of two critical theoretical frameworks: utilitarianism and Feminist Urban Theory. Through these different lenses, one can get a broader picture of the matter and develop rounded solutions for handling it. Research Question In what way is it possible to apply the concepts of utilitarianism and the theory of Feminist Urbanism to improve the existing and create new policies and strategies to address the affordable housing issue and provide social justice to the oppressed groups of people living in urban environments? Critical Perspectives Utilitarian Perspective According to Williams (2013), utilitarianism believes that the greatest good of most people should be brought about in any given action. In the case of applying to the affordable housing problem, utilitarianism would consider the measures that benefit the most people (Williams, 2013). Thus, one major argument from the utilitarian perspective is that expanding the stock of affordable housing units through subsidy programs, joint ventures, and financial incentives for builders is likely to have a higher net utility. According to Udoudom (2021), housing is one of the basic human needs; therefore, if a large number of individuals and families can secure affordable homes, they will be able to save more money and spend it on other aspects of life such as education, health, and other utilities hence improving their standard of living and enhancing the quality of the society. Those supporting this view claim that solving the housing affordability problem would alleviate or eliminate certain costs, enhance the quality of people’s lives, and possibly increase economic efficiency and social order. The opponents of the utilitarian approach state that this method may disregard the rights and liberties of minorities or the oppressed in favor of the majority’s welfare. Thus, there is a possibility that utilitarian policies could reinforce or even deepen the existing injustice because the policies are designed to serve the most people rather than the targeted minority groups (Udoudom, 2021). Moreover, such things as ‘happiness’ or ‘well-being...
