Baden Wurttemberg
Baden Wurttemberg is a state in Germany and happens to be the third largest of all the sixteen independent states that collectively comprise Germany. It possesses an impressively long history that goes as far back as the 1st century AD when the Romans occupied it. When the Holy Roman Empire was instituted in the 5th century, Baden Wurttemberg was incorporated into it, but its status as a state came much later in the 12th century. Fast forward to the 20th century in the year 1951, a trio of three federal states namely Baden, Wurttemberg-Hohenzollern and Wurttemberg-Baden voted to merge and form Baden-Wurttemberg (Jones, 2003).
Geographically, it is located in the southern parts of Germany and shares borders with three other states, in addition to countries like France and Switzerland. The residents speak two German dialects, the first being Alemannic and the other Franconian. Over 10 million people live in this state with roughly half of the population composed of women and the other half men. The official figures from the national German statistics office show that Baden Wurttemberg has the highest number of residents with migrant backgrounds, at 28%, among all the states. About 1.2 million of the 10 million residents were foreign nationals. Up until 1873, their currency was the Gulden but is currently the Euro (Jones, 2003).
