Option #1: Career Management Portfolio Annotated Table of Contents

There are two components for this Portfolio Project: a career management portfolio (which is to be developed, but not submitted), and an annotated career management table of contents portfolio (which will be submitted at the end of Week 8).

Career Management Portfolio

A career management portfolio should be tailored to your individual needs. You were encouraged to outline your career management portfolio in Week 3 and then structure and expand your portfolio each week through in-class discussions and assignments, and out-of-class research. Your career management portfolio will not be submitted as an assignment but is intended to be a work-in-progress to be used and developed over a career lifetime. As described in Module 3, the elements of a career management portfolio can include, but are not limited to, the following:

Part 1: Career Planning

Part 2: Career Development Tools

Part 3: Career Management

With the huge salary that accompanies such positions, I will set aside funds for the establishment of my HR consulting business. I will also embark on adding to my academic credentials with the attainment of GPHR certification which will be significant in the operation of my HR business. “GPHR is a global competency based credential that is designed to validate the skills and knowledge of an HR professional who operates in a global marketplace” (Floyd, 2011). I purport to complete the course in the next three years by attending evening and weekend classes and which will be just in time for the start of the HR firm. Goal 2 I will seek to attain the CEBS certification which will accord me additional skills and expertise in the HR profession. CEBS helps individuals to get a “better understanding of employee benefit principles and concepts” (Lent, 2013). I will have sufficient resources to support the program and the extra skills that I will gunner will fuel me even further to complete the course. I intend to attend the course concurrently with the GPHR certification and also complete it in the next three years. I will therefore seek and attend an institution that offers the two courses and with flexible learning periods. Goal 3 In three years and after the attainment of the CEBS and GPHR certifications I intend to quit my employment position and start my own HR consulting firm. In addition to the funds I will have saved up, I will also seek the services of a financial consultant who will help me with the financial aspects of running a successful business. I will also engage the services of a business initiation consultant whose expertise will be critical in the start-up. Floyd in his article states “Engaging an interim management consultant with relevant industry experience to help guide your small business can help grow your business for the future” (Floyd, 2011). Career Inspiration and Motivation I have always had a passion and interest in human resource and developing skills in people that would help them better manage their careers ever since my time in college where I was pursuing a degree in business management with a major in human resource. The HR department is integral in the success of an organization (Floyd, 2011). Therefore I was motivated to develop myself so that I get the opportunity to be part of a HR team that shapes the fortunes of a company. Hence, I am inspired to see my hard work invested into each employee I’ve recruited, hired, and on boarded turn into commitment, resolution to the their very best, and completely loving their new job. It makes me feel totally rewarded knowing I’ve brought the best candidates on for the company and the employees feel appreciated and rewarded by the company for doing a great job. Self-Assessment/ Strengths and Weaknesses I did a self-identification exercise when I was pursuing my certifications at the university on the best career choice and settled on a career in human resource based on my social traits, strengths and weaknesses. I pride myself in being a determined individual with a positive outlook, attitude and mentality. I am also compassionate and relate exceptionally well with others regardless of their positions in the society. Moreover, I am able to really hear what an employer needs, what the employee’s need, by really listening to what’s being said and what’s NOT being said. Skills Inventory and Experience The skills in human resource which I learned from my college course have been at the center of my career progression and I currently have six years’ experience in the field where I have gained and sharpened important HR skills in people management, strategic management, performance management and employee relations. I have been able to significantly improve on my communication and relation skills that proved to be my Achilles hill at the start of my career. Part Two: Career Development Tools Career Evaluation Methods To effectively evaluate my career, as noted above after understanding my weaknesses I need to evaluate those areas that I can work on not only to improve but also to help me achieve my goals and objectives. The first method to evaluate my career is to analyze my strengths and the skills that am well conversant with and find avenues to improve. My major strength is my ability to effectively communicate with people where I am able to listen to employee and management concerns and come to a conclusion that is beneficial to both parties. I have not more than once helped avert conflicts between junior employees and their managers t...
