Abstract
As part of daily life, sexual and romantic attractions are often occurrences. This paper aimed to exploring both types of attraction in an experiment where participants filled in if the couple was in a romantic or purely sexual relationship, and rated the attraction between them. Their responses were recorded and put in a dataset where it was inspected, cleaned, and organized. A final dataset was arrived at and used for further analysis. The hypothesis was that people perceive romantic attraction better than sexual attraction. Using Chi-square and independent-samples t-test, the dataset was analyzed with condition of the conversation between the two people in the picture, romantic and another sexual attraction as the independent variable (IV). The dependent variables (DV) were perception of a romantic relationship or a hookup and the strength of their relationship. Based on the chi-square test, there was an insignificant effect of condition on type of attraction, X2 (2, N = 22) = 1.0909, p = 0.5796. The independent-samples t-test used to evaluate the effect of condition on strength status prove a significant effect of condition on strength status participants rated the attraction, t (33.117) = -4.0906, p = 0.0002587. These findings led to the rejection of the study’s hypothesis to conclude that the perception of attraction is often sexual when given a conversation between two partners.

Research Question: Does the perception of attraction differ when given a brief conversation between two partners that portray romantic interest versus another portraying sexual attraction?
Introduction
Sex and romance are often essential parts of people’s lives besides work and school. When it comes to sexual attraction and romantic attraction, people’s first reaction is that the duration of sexual attraction tends to be short-lived. In contrast, romantic interest lasts longer than sexual attraction because romantic attraction is more concerned with the external the image. In certain circumstances, partners become estranged after experiencing sexual attraction for a while, which means only sexual attraction exists for both people. In layman’s terms, it is a one-night stand. Others will find that after a period of sexual attraction, the two parties are emotionally connected so that they have the fantasy of a romantic relationship, and the transition of interest occurs. The romantic attraction may not always be related to sex, but it can achieve a peaceful two-way transition to sexual attraction. It is a natural, long-term result of the unification of romantic and sexual attraction. It can be seen that the relationship between sexual attraction and romantic attraction is complex and indescribable.
Research was embarked on to show the relationships in a colloquial form. One of five previous research studies found considerable evidence across a wide range of phenomena that supports the idea that interpersonal attraction is principally determined by inferences about the target’s capacity and willingness (Montoya & Horton, 2013). The study added the question, “How ‘good’ is he or she, and does he or she like you?” The initial part of the question helps assess the other partner’s overall aptitude and competence with a goal-oriented perspective. The latter refers to the willingness-to-benefit assessment often derived from the judgment of perceived acceptance. The study found sufficient evidence that changes in willingness and capacity assessments were associated with changes in attraction.
The second research supported a fitness indicator model of humor style’s role in relationship initiation; positive styles were preferred for long-term relationships, while competence and warmth inferences predicted long-term attraction (DiDonato et al., 2012). The author suggested that humor styles exhibited competency judgments that assisted in determining romantic interest. For instance, a potential suitor would tell a humorous story or pick-up line to provide unique information for partner selection. Also, the connection between humor style and long-term romantic interest was explained by warmth inferences. Being funny and warm during the first stages of interaction could form an excellent base for a thriving relationship. The study quoted another research where some partners reported that their counterparts made them laugh, expressing sexual satisfaction. The conclusion was that focusing on humor styles and warmth was vital when evaluating potential partners.
The third research indicated strong support for distinguishing between sexual desire and pair bonding (Morales Knight, 2012). To be precise, different decision rules for mate selection are obtained in each, and for understanding bisexuality as involving lower prioritization of partner gender. In this study, heterosexually identified participants who supported some same-sex sexuality were actively exploring their sexual orientation identity. The findings concluded that fractal and dynamic complexity and interrelationship of gender and sexual orientation, and the urge to comprehend nontraditional gender and sexual orientation identities.
The fourth research hypothesized that romantic love serves a commitment-related function and sexual desire a reproduction-related function (Gonzaga et al., 2006). Participants in this study listed love top as a state of emotion and sexual desire later. Both forms of emotion were assumed to be related to certain behaviors. For instance, romantic love was associated with feelings that encouraged approach such as happiness as signaled by a set of related cues such as affirmative head nods, leaning towards the partner, and so on. Sexual desire was affiliated with cues such as lip licks, biting, touching, and many others and marked by sexual behaviors such as sexual intercourse with a partner. The researchers noted that many highlighted sexual desire serves as an initial function of love and keeps the partners together during the initial stages of a relationship as the commitment to love grows.
The previous research found that romantic attraction and sexual behavior most closely mapped each other (Ybarra et al., 2019). However, there was apparent discordance between sexual identity and romantic appeal. The study’s participants were primarily attracted to the opposite sex and a few times to the same gender. Its data used to investigate youth’s relative congruence of sexuality, behavior, and romantic attraction proved that romantic interest and sexual behavior were mostly congruent with one’s sexual identity.
