Overview
The Semester Project is an opportunity to select a topic of your choice within the field of Mind, Brain, Health and Education that you will focus on in-depth throughout the semester. Your topic should consider the transdisciplinary (MBHE) lens of the course and include the identification of risk and protective factors in your personal or professional life. In most cases, your research will consist of reading the literature and available research on your topic in order to write a paper that states a concise research question, analyzes strong evidence (from existing publications), and draws conclusions. You are not expected to conduct physical research on human subjects; such work would require IRB approval. which is beyond the scope of this course. Rather, you are encouraged to do a thorough literature review of the information about your topic and relate it to your own life context.
Submission Two: Incorporate feedback from Submission One by making the appropriate changes and adjustments to the Submission One document. Submission Two should include the revisions to Submission One, a refined and updated reference list plus the first drafts of the Problem and the Research Question sections. The Submission Two research question should be in the format: “How and to what extent does x influence y?” Remember, you are trying to identify a problem or gap in the literature (not only your own knowledge) that will be answered by your research question. How Prior Experience and Different Stages Affect Mind and Thinking
Cognition involves memory and thinking processes. Humans use their mind to think when making simple or complex decisions. Based on Jean Piaget’s study, the way people think or make decisions depending on one’s life stage and prior experience. As such, learning new things is an interplay of assimilation and accommodation. For instance, humans adjust new experiences to what they already know. In other words, individuals’ prior experience and different stages affect mind and thinking processes.
Bedny et al. (2018) define adolescence as a stage of development when humans undergo profound body changes in transitioning from social relationships within a family to that of their peers (Bedny et al., 2018). In that light, some of the cognitive functions that occur during this stage include abstract thinking, social cognition, and aspects of episodic memory. Bedny et al. (2018) say that “All learning throughout the life span is associated with neural change, whether this involves modifying long-range tracts during early postnatal development or long-term potentiation of a single synapse” (Bedny et al., 2018, p. 180). At this point, researchers made it clear that what adolescents know or their life experiences significantly affect the decisions they make. The way young people think is highly influenced by what they already know. Moreover, abstract thinking links prior experience with the situation at hand when individuals are making decisions.
Kurt Fischer and Louise Silvern assert that people’s mind and their way of thinking is influenced by stages of life and individual distinctiveness. Specifically, cognitive development needs a framework that conjoins the environment and organism by building collaboration and transactional models. For example, from birth to the age of 18 years, children undergo at least eight developmental stages (Fischer & Silvern, 1985). In other words, the first stage enables them to obtain experiences that help them to navigate the upcoming stages.
