Why Chinese people tend to be crazier about foreign things and more obsequious to foreigners
Cultures tend to differ widely in different parts of the world, but studies have shown that globalization has played a significant role in promoting intercultural relations. Furthermore, certain cultures are considered as being more superior to others and this has prompted most people, especially the young generation, to admire foreign cultures. China is an example of those countries where more people are becoming obsessed with foreign cultures. According to Fish (2017), most young people admire America more than it was evident in the past, especially when it comes to its ideological perspectives and social way of life. Whereas the same applies in the black people’s culture, it is evident that the Chinese people are becoming more attracted to foreign way of life.
Social Change from the Grassroots
Evidence indicates that social change that has taken place from the grassroots in the Chinese society has been responsible for the obsession with foreign cultures. These cultural aspects have been dominant from the education system that has been practiced in China which has motivated most young people to admire other systems in foreign countries. For instance, Fish (2018) gives an example of a Chinese student known as Langou Lian who said that she hated the Chinese education system due to test-centered and high-pressure schooling program in her native Sichuan province. She compares it with the Western education system where adolescents are independent, learn in a carefree atmosphere, and are free to speak their minds while choosing their school activities.
According to Haste and Bermudez (2017), culture is dynamically interwoven with diverse forms of linguistic actions as well as the frames from which cognition occurs. The dynamic concept of nature is evident in Chinese culture as well as black people’s cultures, and this impact on the way people relate to foreign cultures. For instance, leadership and school life in the U.S. heavily relies on popularity level and gaining the trust of other colleagues, and this is an indication of several attributes of populist democracy in the country. On the other hand, in most contemporary schools in China, class prefects and a small group of students act as the management body of the class for minor disciplinary and organizational functions (Haste, 2007). They tend to be similar to the local practices that take place within the political system of the Chinese government. Conversely, Western nations emphasize on ‘democratic classrooms’ which is considered as promoting civic skills and awareness. This reflects a belief that a democratic school environment as well as the power of practice is a small-scale version of a democratic society.
Demand for Foreign Goods
Studies have shown that demand for foreign brands has increased significantly in China over the past few years. The main reason why most people in China buy goods and attire from Western countries is because they are considered as more refined and elegant (moduslink.com, 2018). Studies have also revealed that owning a brand from Western nations is recognized as a matter of prestige, and a confirmation of professional achievement and success in leading a unique lifestyle. In the Chinese society, evidence over the last few years indicates that being different was not a major factor. However, this has changed significantly over the recent past where purchasing and showing off western brands has become an effective way of standing out from the crowd. People are able to show explicitly that they can afford to own Western products.
When it comes to the black people’s culture, evidence indicates although black people also like foreign things and way of life, they are usually motivated by different factors. This could be the main reason why the demand for foreign products tends to differ between the blacks and people from China. For instance, evidence indicates that black people admire to work in foreign countries with the sole intention of remitting money back to their home countries. According to Arrington (2002), close to $400 billion is remitted by foreign-born people working in Americas to their home countries. This also applies to African-Americans who have relatives in Africa and other developing countries across the world. Black people can work and invest in America, but most of these incomes are saved and then sent to their people in their homelands.
Analysts say that China’s demand for Western products has grown significantly since they are perceived as being of higher quality. Furthermore, brands from China have been subjected to negative publicity due to poor quality. Negative public relations (PR) on Chinese brands have been instrumental in influencing most people in China to admire goods from foreign countries. Despite the fact that Chinese companies have increasingly improved the quality of their products, evidence indicates that the damage reputation continues to influence most people to prefer foreign products over locally manufactured products (Sebenius & Qian, 2008). Despite the fact that most consumers in China focus on the total perception of the brand, most individuals continue to argue that brands from foreign countries are of higher quality. Furthermore, foreign companies are increasingly being aware of ways in which they can make their brands to be recognized as global, while at the same time fulfilling the local demands of Chinese customers. This ensures that individuals who are in upward social mobility are able to maintain their Chinese culture while at the same time adopting the foreign lifestyle.
Just like in the case of the Chinese people, blacks also tend to admire foreign products, especially when it comes to migrating to foreign countries. This is due to the fact that foreign nations tend to provide better opportunity of advancing in the social ladder especially when it comes to learning and education opportunities (Buchtel, et al, 2018). Studies have revealed that most blacks who leave their countries and move to the U.S. and other western nations are exposed to more opportunities of advancing economically compared to people living in their home countries. From this perspective, it can be argued economic factors are the main reasons that motivate black people to migrate to foreign nations since they have better opportunities. Studies hav...
