Abstract
The experiment aimed to examine to how people are more likely to take out their cellphones while they are waiting in line if they see someone else using their phone. The experiment was a modern twist of the conformity experiment. There were 24 participants, mainly university students from China and America. The researchers created two survey forms. There will be 10 pictures in each table. There will be ordinary pictures in one form, and 10 pictures of people looking at mobile phones in the other. After watching 5 pictures, participants will have a minute to rest, and then they will continue to see the remaining 5 pictures. Finally, participants will need to tell us during the 1-minute break, how did they spend their time? There are 12 participants in each group, a total of 24 participants. The results showed that more people preferred using their phones when they see others using.
Cell Phone Conformity
Introduction
Many scholars have conducted research to seek answers on whether the broad topic on how people make use of cell phones, whether they are being abused or not, and also whether manufactures conform to market set standards for quality. This literature review goes a step further to review scholarly studies aiming at the leaders and employee integrity on conformity to product and services output. Tian and Robinson (2017) studied the predictors of cellphone use in distracted driving. They noted that Many car accidents are primarily blamed on drivers using their cell phones while driving. The drivers are accused of concentrating on texting, making calls, social media, among other cell phone uses. The purpose of this experiment is to examine if someone is more likely to take out their cellphone while waiting in line if they see someone else using their phone. This is a modern twist on the typical conformity experiment.
Literature Review
The decision by people to use smartphones is from pressure emanating from technological advancement, the psychological perceptions of the users as well as personal experiences. Tian and Robinson (2017), in their article “Predictors of cell phone use in distracted driving: Extending the Theory of Planned Behavior,” tested six predictors that are suspected of distracting drivers while driving and compared it with The Theory of Planned Behavior proposed by Adjen (1991). The results came out positive. The behaviors that were examined in this study include using social media, sending and reading messages, posting on social media, making and receiving calls. The data they collected and analyzed showed that many drivers have a temptation to use their mobile phones in the above ways leading to divided attention that might sometimes lead to accidents. They expanded the model to accommodate past experiences, which even improved the findings on how technology tends to tempt drivers to use their cell phones. The data analyzed on past experiences showed that many drivers were distracted by the thought to use technology on their cell phones to access their social media accounts while driving (Tian & Robinson, 2017). This study clearly showed the need to include past experiences in improving as well as expanding the findings of The Theory of Planned Behavior in predicting the behavior of drivers in using their cell phones while driving. It is, therefore, very vital to increase campaigns on driver behaviors on cell phones as they drive. This study, therefore, concluded that many drivers fail to conform to cell phone usage while driving.
In another study, Scott, Peng, and Prybutok (2015) noted that as technology advances, new products that are of much better quality are also manufactured. This now is like a series of repeated cultures where next is better than the current. As research on various goods also intensifies, researchers should adequately inform all the stakeholders. The experiment tested the quality of mobile phone products cutting across the different divisions in cell phones manufacturing industry of software quality, device quality as well as the quality of the cell phone provider itself. Their findings indicated that organizations benefit a lot from monitoring the quality of their products against two factors. The article gives directions to organizations’ management to plan well for the general good of their organizations. They should deal with cell phone products that have conformed to all the required standards of products. Substandard products are harmful to the reputation of any company and the general maintenance of share of the market.
Many people are fond of using the internet as a measure of the quality of the products they want to purchase. Internet sources have characteristics that one can compare and weigh on the characteristics of the products they would like to buy. Nevertheless, how correct is the information published on the internet as compared to the actual characteristics of the product? Do they conform to the standard features required? This is the case with mobile phones too. Chen, Chang, Chen, and Weng (2016) used a case study of Taiwan telecommunication market to study the behavior of people to adopt certain smartphones that are innovative. They analyzed the data they collected using the technique of structural equation modeling due to its ease to use as well as the compatibility. The findings pointed out that the intention to use a smartphone was positively related to both the informational and normative conformity. The results also showed that the people who used the smartphones earlier have a higher probability of conforming once again due to the influence of information, while the late users showed a higher probability due to normative conformity. There should always be conformity between what descriptions of a product are found on the internet and those that are found on the real product (Chen et al., 2016).
Many teens are so excited to own mobile phones. This urge is often copied from parents and their elder siblings’ behavior to use technology in different ways. Cooper (2016) studies now teenagers use mobile phones with the US as his case study. He conducted his research on the rural side of Texas between 2007 and 2008. 2G networks were still the trending technology at the moment. He grouped his population into two groups of middle school age between 13 and 14 and the second group of university students aged 18 to 20. His work is centered on the role of technology in social shaping the teens. The study tries to dig out the extent to which mobile phones are used by teens for self-identification as well as expression. It goes ahead to dig out the emotional connection that teens have developed with cell phones besides the ways of controlling the addiction of cell phones on people (Cooper, 2016).
Hewlin, Dumas, and Burnet (2017) studied how the integrity of a leader contributes to creating facades of commodities and found out that the employees tend to fake a lot when their leaders have strong principles. In their first study, they found out that the undergraduate students who had values that differed from those of the members of their discussion groups, as well as the administration of their university, faked more when they saw the leader of their discussion group as having strong principles (Hewlin, 2017). Their second study was a survey of adults who are employed. The survey found out that pretending negatively affected the quality of work at the organizations the sample population was working for. Their two studies found out that in the scenarios where the leaders held high integrity values, there is a high tendency for employees to fake their conformity to compensate their values. They also found out that it is not automatic that leaders with high integrity enjoy the positive response from their subjects. They concluded that fake conformity explains the poor relationship between the engagement of the employees and their values. When this is equated to the case of cell phones, fake conformity produces substandard products as well as employees defying the rules of mobile phone use at workplaces (Hewlin, 2017).
