CBT Agenda Setting
Brief Review of Each of The Six Agenda-Setting Items
Successful therapy is based on the process therapists select to guide the sessions. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), there are six agenda setting elements that help to structure the sessions. (Johnson et al., 2023) These ensure that the counsellor and patient are on the same page regarding goals and focus. The first component is collaborative goal setting. Here, the therapist and client set goals for the sessions and ensure therapy process. They have to collaborate as that helps the patient get ownership sense and show commitment during therapy. The second component is agenda review. The topics include progress discussion from the last session, any assignments, arising issues and concerns and setting goals (Kazantzis & Dobson, 2024). The review is important as it helps to focus.
The third component is agenda items priority. The client and patient work together to determine most important elements that need to be prioritized. The fourth component is agenda negotiation. If there are discrepancies between the client and therapist, they need to negotiate so that they can agree. The fifth structure is establishing the session structure. This happens after the agenda has been set. The aim is to outline how the different items are to be allocated and a framework that ensures that efficiency and focus are maintained. The last component is feedback and adjustment (King & Boswell, 2019). The therapist has to ensure that they collect information through checking the patient to understand sessions effectiveness and what may need to be addressed. The method is critical in setting flexibility essential in developing a responsive and client-centered therapy.
Agenda Setting
Video 1: “CBT Role-Play – Setting an Agenda for a Counseling Session”
The counselor efficiently confronted the client's fears during this session by actively listening and bringing the discussion to the key agenda items. The counsellor skillfully guided the client through managing the various stressors and highlighted that schoolwork was the major contributing factor to her struggles and impeding goals. Through the collaboration with the counselor, the client could see how his schoolwork problem was intertwined with the other aspects of his life and that by fixing this issue he could improve those (Grande, 2015). This method assisted the client to experience that they were heard and guided while a plan was already set out to help them move forward.
However, the counselor did not sufficiently delve into the client's emotions regarding the client's relationship troubles and office problems. Although the counselor acknowledged these issues as challenges, he failed to stress them enough and their effect on the client. This could worsen the patient's struggles as she had no guide on addressing them. Taking a more holistic approach incorporating emotional support with coping strategies alongside the agenda items as the basis would have better empowered the client to manage well her stressors (Grande, 2015). Overall, was a small difference in the extent of the support given compared to all the client concerns.
