College and even youth athletes are now faced with the demand of being consistently online in order to sustain their public identity and brand. Although platforms such as Instagram, X (Twitter), or TikTok provide athletes with a chance to communicate with their fans, develop commercial relationships, and create the narratives of their own, they also subject athletes to a level of constant scrutiny, criticism, and unrealistic expectations. Consequently, social media has become one of the most effective instruments as well as a contributing factor to psychological pressure. The proposed research study will examine the impact of social media on the mental well-being and performance of an athlete, such as the psychological issues that an athlete experiences, including cyberbullying, performance anxiety, body image issues, and social pressure. The project will also address how social media has a positive impact on athletes- empowering athletes, expressing themselves, activism, and community building.
