Reasons for Employee Development
Many organizations have invested heavily toward helping their employees plan their development. This is because the business front is a dynamic one, and it is therefore critical for employees to be multi-faceted (Cao & Thomas, 2013). Employee development refers to enhancing their formal education, skills, and job experiences to prepare them for the uncertain future (Noe, 2019). For development plans to be effective, both employees and the company have responsibilities that must be carried out meticulously. For instance, for any company to effectively develop its employees, it has to identify their development needs. On the other hand, employees must have clear-cut goals for the future and be committed to achieving them. Employee development is not a futile undertaking, as many detractors contend; on the contrary, it is a sound and worthy undertaking. Employee development also helps to ensure that employees have the requisite skills and competencies to serve clients with satisfaction. It also equips them with the necessary skills to come up with new solutions for their customers and create new products. The versatility achieved can significantly spur employees’ confidence. By showing employees that it is interested in their development, a company enhances their engagement and satisfaction. Engagement can also be improved considerably by developing managers who will develop friendly working environments.
Through development, employees are empowered to prepare for changes in their jobs which could be precipitated by new technology, work designs, and customers, among others. Developing employees is also critical because it can help a company to adapt to the changing business environment and strategies (Noe, 2019). This is usually achieved by providing them with new skills and managerial talent. Another reason why companies develop employees is to identify and therefore groom gifted employees who show the potential to become future managers.
Benefits to Companies
Developing employees has a raft of benefits for companies; otherwise, companies would not spend time and resources on the undertaking. One way in which companies benefit from developing their employees is by being able to retain valuable managers and talent. This, in turn, gives the company a competitive edge over other companies. One way in which this can be achieved is through a lateral movement which refers to the movement among different jobs in the same department. It can also be achieved by teaching employees a set of new different skills, thus enabling them to deal with any emerging challenges. Companies may also decide to take their employees, especially managers, through a number of courses. These courses will help the managers cr...
