Case Study: JetBlue Flight 292
Crew resource management (CRM) involves the flight crew's proper use of available resources to ensure safety and operation efficiency, avoid stress, minimize errors, and improve efficiency. It was established as a reaction to new insights that showed the causes of jet accidents. CRM is a program designed to arm aircrew with skill sets in case an incident involving human error occurs at any given time and causes devastating effects. As in the case of JetBlue 292, the skill sets are intended to improve safety and ensure the aircrew is fully equipped in dangerous instances and emergencies. Elements of CRM that were applied in the case of JetBlue 292 incidence include aeronautical decision-making, coordination, communication, and leadership. They worked collectively and efficiently to ensure a smooth landing.
Aeronautical Decision Making
Aeronautical decision-making (ADM) is an element of CRM effectively applied in the emergency incident involving JetBlue 292. ADM is an aviation terminology that defines choices made in aeronautics. It is a CRM element that provides an organized method for understanding pilots’ mental processes to regularly choose the effective action to respond to a certain situation (Friend, 2020). Therefore, ADM is what an aircrew intends to do, subject to the most recent data available. Aircrews apply a systems thinking approach to constantly decide on the best action while responding to particular situations. The pilot has to make a significant decision which is probably the most critical role given the need for key decisions and the potential repercussions of making wrong choices (MacLeod, 2021). In the case of JetBlue flight 292, the captain and the first offer were not able to see the nose gear from the cockpit, and they had to confirm if it was at a 90-degree angle by flying by the control tower at a low altitude (Garbuno & Joshi, 2020). Based on that information, the captain decided the best option was to prepare for an emergency landing by diverting to Los Angeles and evaluating all possible outcomes. The flight eventually landed safely, and the captain waited for a signal from the air traffic control (ATC) confirming that there were no signs of the plane catching fire after it completely stopped for the passengers to alight freely and swiftly.
Coordination
Coordination is also crucial in crew resource management, where each aircrew member is allocated a specified role. However, every undertaking must be perfect in an emergency, there is no room for mistakes or poor decis...
