Introduction
Traffic congestion arises when there is higher heed on traffic to the extent that it surpasses the available means in the transport system. The congestion usually varies with times of the day. Rush hours and rainy seasons exhibit highest traffic congestions with high traffic volumes on highways and roads. Streets in major cities of the world experience traffic congestion as a result of transportation networks that include the use of roads, rails, pedestrians and commuters on bicycle among others.
Understanding of traffic congestion needs comprehension of physical operations and the users' point of view regarding congestion and its impacts. A physical operation on traffic includes the use of vehicles, motorcycles, pedestrians in all the networks as well as how such aspect compete for the limited spaces in the street and network (Komanoff, 2014). On the other hand, the user's perspective requires an understanding of their expectations about the road, rail, air and other networks operations. Traffic congestion causes problems in towns especially on free movement of people and goods as well as vehicles. Besides, the different daily business performances experience delays and increase in insecurity among others. Such delays in traffic due to congestion result to economic sabotage in various nations. Also, most towns exhibit cases of theft and terrorism due to traffic congestion (Komanoff, 2014). Therefore, there is a need to avail proper security to curb such problems especially with efficient management of traffic congestion.
Nature and Extent of Congestion as an Economic Sabotage in both New York and Cairo
New York and Cairo are essential cities that exhibit traffic congestion in the current century. Whenever a person visits these towns, there is a widespread stressful feeling from traffic congestion while moving from one point of the city to another. The gridlock in these urban centers makes people late to work. It is a significant hindrance and loathes to the economy of the town as deliveries cannot arrive on time (Komanoff, 2014). Even though traffic congestion is a vital sign of economic growth and expansion, however, there is the inevitable adverse financial effect on the economy. Ambulances are getting blocked with casualties, some succumbing to preventable deaths while the rates of reported accidents are growing from massive traffic congestion. These implications are detrimental to growth and expansion of the towns. Few cities experience positive impacts of congestion. For instance, in some developed States in America, traffic congestion indicates the employed population who are using the roads to access to their workstation (Komanoff, 2014). In some cases, traffic would translate to an active age group who are participating the gross domestic development of the states. However, both New York and Cairo are cities that experience disadvantages of traffic congestion that outweigh their advantages (Komanoff, 2014).
Increase in population in USA result to rise in the population of New York. Therefore, there is high demand for traveling within and outskirts of the city. The numerous highways within the city still cannot solve the problem due to their slow process that does not match the pace of traffic congestion. The combination of wastages in USA New York included results to 5.5 billion hours and 2.9 billion more gas fuel due to traffic congestion (Schrank, Eisele & Lomax, 2012). Furthermore, enterprises that operate on transits and supply chains register losses due to traffic congestion in New York with high expenditures especially on distribution and delivery (Schrank, Eisele & Lomax, 2012). The city experiences high frequencies of traffic jams due to vehicles that move slowly resulting in the high capacity ratio on the roads, especially on rush hours. The New York residents also experience wastages due to emergencies such as fire breakouts, medical issues, breakdowns and collisions among others during peak hours (Grant-Muller & Laird, 2007). Traffic congestion in New York becomes an economic sabotage as the average commuter spends an average of 53 hours on the wheel waiting for a break in the traffic jam. Besides, the city is currently the fifth worst town regarding traffic congestion management in the USA alone. Besides, the residents in the city spend 20 percent increase in time when traveling due to traffic congestion (Schrank, Eisele & Lomax, 2012). A report released by the INRIX in 2013 reveals that interstate traffic congestion, especially for New York, is 34.9 minutes on average with 19.9 congestion score. Such results indicate poor management of traffic congestion by the USA government hence it is an economic sabotage (Schrank, Eisele & Lomax, 2012).
Separately, Cairo the city with over 20 million people and 3 million cars has a devastating and pessimistic view of traffic congestion. Time is an essential factor of production. Getting to work late and leaving early to escape the extreme nuance of traffic along the outer rings within Cairo has jeopardized the economy of the country. The workforce is underutilized in such cities. The government has incurred an enormous amount of money to bring the solution. In regards to these consequences, this paper will explore how traffic congestion impacts on economic growth of cities in the developing countries and demonstrate the possible solutions to traffic congestion in towns (Schaller, 2010). Cairo city continues to exhibit the reduced quality of life and dwindling economy. Most of the commuters waste time on traffic with unnecessary fuel consumption wears and tears of vehicles. Averagely, a commuter drives along the corridors at 15 -40 km/h with normal speed expected to be between 60 Km/h and 80 Km/h. Furthermore, their city experiences increased emissions of harmful gases and high costs in transportation hence economic loss that leads to a reduction in GDP (Schaller, 2010).
The problem of traffic congestion continues to raise concern that has led to different studies on the impacts of such traffic congestion especially on time wastages, freight, and distribution among others. Other studies show the extent of traffic congestion about its effects on the lives of people. Separately, researchers note that proper management of traffic congestion involves examination of the behavior of the traffic regarding its physical capacity and the expectations of the users on the operation of the whole system. However, there are limited comparison studies on traffic congestion and its impacts as well as remedies in both New York and Cairo.
