MG-GY 6503 – Management of Information Technology
and Information Systems
Review of Team Case Research Paper and Presentations
A case study analysis requires you to investigate a business problem,
examine the alternative solutions, and propose the most effective solution.
The body of the research paper should be 8-10 pages (not including title
page, abstract, conclusion, references, and appendices). Teams will
proceed with the following steps:
1) Analyze the Case - Teams will begin by analyzing the chosen case to
identify the primary organization and its key problems or issues.
2) Compare with a Similar Organization - Teams will then identify a
similar organization within the same industry that faced similar problems
or issues. Teams will examine how the similar organization addressed
these challenges and the strategies or solutions it implemented.
3) Evaluate Outcomes - Next, teams will evaluate the outcomes from the
similar organization’s strategies to identify lessons or strategies that could
be applied to the primary organization.

4) Develop Alternatives - Based on the analysis and comparison, teams
should develop three strategic alternatives that the primary organization
could implement to address its problems or issues. These alternatives
should consider different approaches, methods, or strategies that are
feasible and applicable within the primary organization’s context.
5) Evaluate Alternatives - Teams will evaluate each alternative by
identifying its advantages and disadvantages. This evaluation should
focus on practical implementation, feasibility, and potential effectiveness.
6) Make Recommendations - Teams will select the best alternative
among the three and justify why it is the most effective solution for the
primary organization, explaining why the other alternatives were not
selected. In addition, teams should assess the feasibility of the chosen
alternative from technical, operational, and financial standpoints,
addressing these aspects in separate sections, rather than in a single
sentence or paragraph.

Once you have gathered the necessary information, your analysis should
include the following sections:
1) Title Page – Include Case Study Title, Student Names, Institution
Name, Course Name, Instructor’s Name and Assignment Due Date.
2) Abstract - The abstract should be a brief, comprehensive summary of
the key points of the case study, including the primary issue, analysis, and
proposed recommendations or solutions. The abstract should typically be
between 150-250 words.
3) Introduction – The introduction should provide an overview of the
primary organization and a brief summary of the key problems and issues
presented in the case study.
4) Problem Statement – Provide a rank-ordered hierarchy of the
problems facing the primary organization. Explain why these are the key
problems, justify the ranking, and provide additional details about the
nature of each problem or issue.

5) Comparison – Conduct a comparative analysis by identifying a similar
organization that faced comparable problems or issues. Examine the
strategies the similar organization employed and extract key lessons
learned that could be applied to address the primary problem or issue
faced by the primary organization.
6) Alternatives – Provide three possible strategic alternative
recommendations that the primary organization could implement to
address its problems or issues. Evaluate each alternative
recommendation by identifying its relative advantages and disadvantages.

7) Recommendations – Determine and state your choice for the best course
of action from the alternative recommendations considered. Provide a
detailed explanation of why this option was chosen and why the other
alternatives were not selected. Assess the feasibility of your chosen
recommendation from technical, operational, and financial standpoints. When
assessing the feasibility of your chosen recommendation, ensure that
technical, operational, and financial aspects are addressed in separate
sections, rather than in a single sentence or paragraph.
8) Conclusion – Include a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the
paper.
9) References – Use a separate page to list all references used. Every
source mentioned in the paper should have an entry. Incorporate a minimum
of 8-10 references to enhance the depth of your research, thoroughly address
key elements of the topic, and offer substantial support for your
recommendations. These references should be from credible, relevant, and
peer-reviewed sources to ensure the validity and reliability of your analysis.
For the requirement is 8-10 pages but I do want write 6 pages on this one at first.

Decision-Making Failure at AT&T: Lessons from Verizon’s Data
Student’s Name
Institutional Affiliation
Abstract
The paper examines AT&T’s poor decision-making, relying on the wrong cost information from WorldCom, which ultimately caused problems for the telecom giant in the late 90s. The incorrect data application caused misguided strategic initiatives, operational inefficiencies, and a significant loss of market share. The study stresses the value of effective and accurate data in guiding decisions. Comparatively, the study examines Verizon, a company known for its data governance, to outline what lessons can be learned for management and decision-making. The main findings show that organizations should have a data governance framework; an end-to-end data quality management process; and leverage analytics to make informed and effective strategic decisions. AT&T should assign clear responsibilities for managing data, enhance data quality management processes, and employ advanced analytics to help make better strategic decisions. The researchers conclude that through the adoption of best practices showcased in Verizon, AT&T can ensure the correctness and reliability of its data, resulting in more competent strategic decision-making and preventing any reoccurrences of a similar nature in the future.
Decision-Making Failure at AT&T: Lessons from Verizon’s Data
Introduction
In the late 1990s, AT&T, a major telecommunications firm, ran into problems because its strategies were based on faulty information. One of the biggest errors made by the corporation was its dependence on incorrect cost data on WorldCom (Redman, 2008). This case study looks at what went wrong with AT&T’s decision-making while looking at Verizon’s strong data governance to assess best practices. This paper will provide some recommendations for improving AT&T’s data governance and strategic decision-making by considering the main issues faced by the company along with Verizon’s successes. The study stresses the importance of ensuring data is accurate and trustworthy in the decision-making process of an organization. Further, it recommends the strategic options that AT&T can exploit to avoid such mistakes again.
Problem Statement
AT&T’s mistakes in the late 1990s are an example of how costly reliance on wrong and unverified data can be to an entity of that caliber. The company’s plan to re-enter local markets and provide end-to-end service relied on cost data from WorldCom, which was later learned to be erroneous (Redman, 2008). Using this false data further cascaded problems for the company, which ended up hampering its productivity and competitiveness in the industry.
AT&T’s decision-making failure generated three primary problems. The first and most significant problem is inaccurate strategic planning. AT&T’s re-entry into local markets was a bad idea because it used faulty WorldCom cost data. Due to faulty data from WorldCom, AT&T’s plan to re-enter local markets was based on wrong estimates (Redman, 2008). This problem was significant because it resulted in poor execution. The company was unable to estimate the market and operational costs correctly which hindered their strategic plans, wasting efforts, and missing chances.
The second strategic challenge AT&T faced was operational inefficiencies. Faulty data led to operational complications for AT&T. The company tried to be close to WorldCom concerning managing the ensuing operational expenses. WorldCom’s operational expenses like data expenses and other expenses were largely false numbers thereby hindering the proposed synergy with AT&T (Redman, 2008). Consequently, AT&T failed to merge its expenses in line with WorldCom’s false reports leading to operational inefficiencies. These operational inefficiencies worsened AT&T’s financial troubles and weakened its market position, even though not as much as the inaccurate data.
Thirdly, AT&T also faced a great issue in losing its market share. Ineffective execution of strategy caused a huge loss of AT&T’s market share. Rival firms who were assisted by trustworthy and correct data made thoroughly detailed decisions which led to their edge over AT&T (Redman, 2008). Further, AT&T’s failure to efficiently put its strategy into practice caused it to lose a significant share of the market to Verizon, Sprint, and Qwest Communications who were the largest beneficiaries. Other rivals who relied on accurate and reliable data, were able to outshine AT&T. These problems highlight the primary requirement of accurate and trusted data in strategic decision-making (Dyer, 2023). Using untrustworthy information gave rise to inefficient planning and operations that resulted in loss of market share. The loss of market share could not rank higher in this hierarchy because it was merely the conse...
