SHARED OBJECTIVE
With this assignment we are hoping to get a better understanding of how leaders got to where they are today. We are trying to understand their personality traits, as well as which actions or steps they took to get into their leadership role. We chose Sheryl Sandberg, because we want to explore female leadership in particular. We are also trying to improve our ability to work as a team. Leaders play an important role in the growth of organizations and company staff. These are people who are very influential in decision making, progress and, most of all, developing strategies, processes or innovations. The leadership trait we focus on to facilitate discussion is the innovative leader. To further narrow the debate, we are going to study these in “Sheryl Sandberg," one of the top female leaders of the modern era. She's now affecting COO on Facebook in various ways. In our discussions, it is important to know that we will identify some of the leaders who refer to the real world that may or may not support our debate. Although we are not studying all the characteristics in depth, we should focus on the key features of vision, charisma, influence, power-housing, public interest and social impact.

1 WHO IS SHERYL SANDBERG?

“We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.” -Sheryl Sandberg.
Sheryl Sandburg is a woman who wields influence in the industry with a variety of titles, including American technology directors, activists, and best-selling author of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead and billionaires. Born in 1969, Sheryl Sandberg grew up in Miami, and after a stellar record at school, moved to Harvard in 1987 to pursue a degree in economics. During her years in Harvard, she co-founded an initiative titled ‘Women in Economics and Government’. Later, she became a successful businesswoman, former Google executive and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Facebook since 2008 is one of the very few women who has forayed into the male-dominated corporate world and left an indelible mark. With her willingness to go beyond convention and to see what no one else does, she has managed to rise higher and higher across different organisations the World Bank, the US Treasury, as well as top tech giants like Google and Facebook and has used this platform to inspire thousands of women to reach out and fulfill their dreams. Sheryl Sandburg was the founder of Leanin.org and she became the first woman on Facebook’s board of directors in 2012 (Edwards, 2018). Before she joined Facebook as its COO, Sandburg served as vice president of global online sales and operations at Google and was involved in setting up a Google's philanthropic arm Google.org. Also, before Google, Sandburg was the chief of staff for U.S. Treasury Lawrence Summers. Sandberg is ranked on Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. As such, we think Sheryl Sandburg is a good example to learn because it shows its role as a leader and is active in various fields, is respected and recognized by many people, and motivates others.
▪ Why are they considered a leader – refer back to definitions of leadership and apply it to your leader.
Sheryl Sandberg said, “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.” Just because they are smart and generate a lot of revenue from their business does not mean they are good leaders. Leadership isn’t a cookie cutter word. The term doesn’t only refer to men. And leadership takes courage. Being able to influence change involves taking time to understand one’s personal values, processing feelings effectively, efficiently working in teams, communicating openly and being persistent in seeking growth. These are qualities everyone is capable of attaining (Efrem, 2018). Leadership is not outside of any person’s grasp. In Sandberg’s words, the question is, “What would you do, if you weren’t afraid?” Sheryl Sandberg has several reasons for being recognized as a good leader. She is already recognized as a good leader in the industry as a result of the industry and has not stopped it, based on her experience she has served as the leader of women all over the world who have spoken out for women's social status, unfair treatment, and leadership challenges. In 2010, she gave an electrifying TED Talk in which she described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which became a phenomenon and has been viewed more than two million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. In Lean In, Sheryl examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, common sense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential. In March 2014, Sheryl and Lean In sponsored the Ban Bossy campaign, a television and social media censorship advocacy campaign designed to ban the word bossy from general use due to its perceived harmful effect on young girls. The web site provides school training material, leadership tips, and an online pledge form to which visitors can promise not to use the word. Sheryl says, “Together, we can break down the stereotypes that hold us all back, making our organizations more productive and our homes happier. Together, we can create a world where everyone—women and men, girls and boys—has true choice and equal opportunity to follow his or her dreams.”
▪ Who have they been a follower to at some point in their life? Who is/was their role model, or strong influence in their life? Why/how?
She said, "I have many role models, my first is my mother, Adele Sandberg — My mother has the most empathy of anyone I know. She raised her children, taught English as a second language, helped her parents spend their final years in dignity and comfort, and now runs Save Your Hearing, a non-profit to prevent noise-induced hearing loss in young people. She has always contributed to her community and the world. She is my inspiration. Secondly, Serena Williams — Serena is a role model for women and men everywhere. She shows all of us what's possible when you work hard to achieve your dreams. She's also a truly wonderful and supportive friend who shares her strength to lift up those around her. Lastly, Salim Habayeb — Salim was one of the first people I ever worked for. He was a doctor working in global health at the World Bank and we worked on leprosy in India together. He took me to India for the first time and helped me face heart-breaking poverty and illness by combining hard analytics with personal caring. He told me it was ok to cry after a day in a leprosy home, but then to take that energy and channel it into the hard work that could help people in need. To this day I believe that those are the ingredients we need to solve the world's problems.”
▪ What is the leader’s philosophy/purpose/vision and goals? How are they demonstrated?
The leader must be a visionary person for the transformation to take place in each process or scenario. Individuals who can contemplate, evaluate, and surpass can achieve their own and organizational success. When Sheryl Sandberg was in Google, she joined, which was responsible for selling not only Google's advertising and publishing products online, but also its consumer products and Google's book Search and while working for Google, she increased her advertising and sales team from 4 to 4000. When she left Google and joined Facebook in 2008, Facebook which was only 550 people, and she moved confidently because of her vision of strengthening the organization and hiring employees. In her words, “You should always have several people who could succeed you—and then several people who can succeed them—so that you’re prepared for future challenges.” Therefore, her experience with online marketing at Google gave her insight into Facebook's progress.
▪ How does the leader inspire and motivate? Who does the leader inspire and motivate? Who are the followers?
Their choices, decision making, or affecting their personal lives are one of the important qualities a leader can show. These characteristics mean that a leader can also set up an individual for success or failure. Sandburg's thesis is that women's careers have been interrupted not only by gender discrimination but also our desire to be loved, our reluctance to assert ourselves, and our relationship with our husbands and partners (Saikia, 2017). Cheryl's "Rain in" focuses on women and their job juggling, which is about her experiences with fellow women she interacts with or works with. Through the book, she has influenced many women who aspire to the growth of the "C Suite" team and seek help. By ranking seventh among the most influential women in the world, she has set the path and direction for current and future generations.
▪ Describe the leader’s personality traits, behaviours and leadership style(s); provide researched evidence to support your conclusions, show how they approach and handle different situations.
So far, this article has seen how Cheryl has worked with high-ranking officials, colleagues, and women. As she mentioned at first, we can observe her social impact on nature when she started her book "Rain In." However, she agreed that her book, the worst moment of her husband's passed away, did not focus on single mothers or women entrepreneurs. It's not easy to accept her lost, but she was a woman who could turn the loss into spending time with herself and identified a mission for herself. "When a tragedy occurs, it offers a choice. You can bend to emptiness or try to find meaning. Over the past 30 days I have spent many lost moments in that emptiness. And I know that many of the moments in the future will be consumed by enormous emptiness. But when I get the chance, I want to choose life and meaning." This certainly tells me about her positive personality and her role in society. Many women are inspired to accept challenges, investigate, reflect, and improve their lives forever. According to regulatory documents released, she has shown unconditional love for one person (Fessler, 2018). She donated more than $100 million in stocks to charity last week. She gave about $110 million worth of Facebook shares to the Cheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Fund, a recently renamed charity fund to honor her late husband. It just proves that being a responsible woman is possible to strike a balance between an individual and a professional life, and it really inspires women. Also, expanded support for her family through her OptionB.com and Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Fund. She proved herself very merciful. It is important to know that she did not have any strong focus on developing individuals under her for her success. This makes her a strong leader of transformation rather than a leader of servants. She ranks second on Facebook, and if she needs to move from any organization to the first, she needs to show her ability to empower people and make decisions on their behalf. She can make her career level peak and inspire more men and women in the future.
