In the United States, 83 percent of girls and 79 percent of boys reported being bullied. (Statistics and Laws. n.d.) Nowadays, so many students live under bullying pressure. Most of the school environments have become a great threat to the security of the kids. The data from JAMA network indicates that “bullying is a strong risk factor for the later development of psychopathologic behaviors.” It makes them have a lot psychological issues that also directly affect their academic performance. Most victims of bullying cannot concentrate on their studies since they keep on meditating on the ill act done to them. The complex nature of the problem makes it harder for parents and the people around the incident to pay attention and offer maximum protection to the kids. Parents never get involved unless they hear of certain isolated issues that draw their attention. Therefore, people always ignore this big problem. It is ironical that most parents do not understand what their children could be going through. To help solve this problem, it is crucial to consider a long term solution. Students need to be educated on bullying and how it affects them. Students should be taught about social sciences, issues to do with body shape, race, cultures, etc. It should be made perfectly clear to students that these are but aspects of diversity and one need not be sensitive to such. Having these sessions should help build excellent bridges for students to understanding how they should handle bullies in the case of the incidents. For parents or adults, they should change their behavior and communication methods. Also some children grow under harsh conditions in their family settings (Divecha, 2019). Moreover, adult anti-bullying education organizations should play a more important role. Finally, government should join in to solve the problem to work on making policies to support anti-bullying education become actualized. The solution focuses on educating students and parents. Although the government can implement various intervention methods, parents and teachers play the most significant roles in the action to stop bullying. However, the process may take long and students should learn the precautionary measures to enhance their safety. And adults can do better job to guide and protect their children. This solution is going to greatly reduce the incidences of bullying in schools.
The professor of Toledo university Dake who focuses on public health education aspect writes that “the nature and extent of bullying at school” is quite complex. He continues to say that the children who participate in bullying have a 2.8 to 4.0 times higher risk of depression than those who do not, and a 30-32 times higher risk of victimization（Dake, J. A., Price, J. H., & Telljohann, S. K. 2003). The risk brings lifetime impacts on the children (Scherman & Annunziato, 2018). In this case, the kids face hardships and difficulties while dealing with various issues later in life.
School bullying is a social problem that has existed for a long time, impacting the lives of most students in the United States negatively. The continual existence of bullying originates from the general overlooking by schools and communities as most people in the settings do not realize the seriousness and extent of the issue. Bullying can happen anywhere and at any age. However, the American society pays much attention to school bullying, the primary and secondary schools where children and teenagers gather and are also the most vulnerable places for bullying. Compared with other countries, the United States has already done a lot in trying to prevent bullying. However, the measures taken by schools, families and other parties to deal with school bullying are very limited. Teachers have also laid various prevention measures like installation of camera systems in schools to enhance maximum prevention (Elvia, 2019). However, as things stand, more needs to be done to help alleviate the issue of bullying.
The most important factors that lead to this bullying problem is the ignorance by adults. People often think that a squabble between classmates is not enough to worry about and many adults take time before they note any unusual behaviors in their children. Some bullying incidents were found to have caused a lot of damage to the student's mentality. These kids keep the memories fresh in their minds resulting to continuous battling with the issue. Bullying varies and some instances of bullying can greatly influence the lives of students. Parents need to be on high alert to help ensure this issue is defeated. Bullied students cannot exhibit similar characteristic to the normal students living in undisrupted environments (Gordon, 2019). Schools are also at fault because many have not implemented measures to help deal with the issue. The judiciary is also yet to consider bullying a crime in spite of the damage it causes. No one appears to pay attention to the issue of bullying and this has only helped to enhance the issue as the bullies grow in confidence. It is true that bullying is not a new idea and that many generations have had instances of bullying. However, as an issue that impacts life, it appears that more attention is needed or else, society will raise a fearful, depressed, and anxious young people. The degree of bullying does not matter in the measurement of the impact since the issue has general impacts on all victims. Bullying yields lifetime impacts on the affected children.
Because bullying is hard to define, it is thus an invisible crime. School bullying can be classified into physical abuse, psychological abuse, verbal abuse, cyber-bullying, and sexual assault. But these abuses don’t have clear boundaries (Peck, 2014). It is difficult for people to find an accurate bottom line in language or behavior. The students do not understand the origin of the issues and all they can explain is that they just found themselves in the mix of confusion. In many cases, the bully will only be punished if there are obvious marks on the victim's body. This is extremely unfair for small and introverted children, because psychological trauma has a far more profound impact than physical injury. Parents should teach their children on various issues concerning respect to impart positive growth and interaction with other people in society. Also, parents should ensure that their children grow and excel in comfortable environments. Also, every family setting should advocate for healthy relationships between kids to avoid the incidences of sibling bullying. As indicated, it can happen anywhere and parents need to teach their children how to identify instances of bullying and how to handle the same instances. Even though adults can also be bullied, the population that is most affected includes teenagers and small children. Society needs to protect the growing population from the issue to enhance positive growth and development (Divecha, 2019). Parents, teachers, and administrators need to gain sufficient awareness to protect students from bullying. This issue will help students and kids out of schools to avoid bullying incidences.
Even though people are trying to control bullying, it still happens. It is incredibly difficult to prevent bullying because of the many forms that it can take. As mentioned above, abusers can be physical with their victims, inflict verbal assault on their victims, etc. So, it becomes difficult to try and solve the problem while not considering how it happens. The bullying problem is a global issue. Because each country has different cultural traditions, different levels of education, it's very difficult to have an accepted solution to this problem which means that each country has to have a plan for its own culture and its existing social base.
But either way, school bullying has other aspects of social evils hidden within it. Students have been bullied because of their race, others because of their supposed political inclinations, and others because of the sexual orientation as individuals belonging to the LGBT community have often stated.
