Revenge must be accomplished
It is so discouraging; the problem of guilt has a result of violence. Hurting and hurting people. The motivation been revenge and betrayal , this is not because human beings are naturally evil but because the idea of setting scores for survival is one of the mechanism in our today complex social society. The desire to revenge is as old as mankind and to understand is well we need to understand its root course. Remember Cain had to kill his brother for revenge! Revenge is not in men alone but even in all other primates. The difference man is hunted by guilty after an action (Roman, 2005).
Any behavior that goes against cooperation towards survival in a chimpanzee`s community is regarded as betrayal and has to be punished. Peers in a chimpanzees community expect honesty and when not practiced a disciplinary anger is implemented towards the offender. The same character can be trace within human history. The desire to revenge is an evolved character out of human desire to have justice. Therefore, the need for justice can be twisted to fit the needs of a certain community or society (Roman, 2005).
If we hope to understand and have a clue unto why people act violently towards others and themselves then we need to examine roots of betrayal and revenge among different characters in different books and movies. We need also to understand guilty and punishment as a result of revenge and betrayal among the characters. This will give us the correct way to deal with guilty or how we should punish. This paper will examine the following movies and books: movies "Mean Creek" by Jacob Aaron, "The Reader" by Stephen Daldry, "Dead Man Walking" by Tim Robbins; and books "The Reader" by Bernhard Schlink, "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. The paper will also give a personal argument concerning guilty, revenge, betrayal and punishment.
The desire to revenge is very strong and overwhelming but our intuitive logic about it often dangerous. It is an act in humanity that aims at changing shame into pride. Many traditions, governments and societies have ways of dealing with this issue but mostly they give unsatisfactory hence leading to more violence (Butler, 2004).
In the cold blood by Truman Capote, the act of revenge is clearly demonstrated by the Truman Capote desire to look unto the killers of the family of Kansas. Out of his desire to revenge Truman Capote was able to have one of the mostly known stories. He is determined to ensure the killers, Richard Hickok and Perry Smith dearly pays for their action. Nothing will stop him in using any canning method to ensure his desire, revenge, is accomplished.
It is well show how he took advantage of Perry through a relationship he technically build to retrieve secrets from him. One wonders did Truman really empathize with the captives? If yes, why did he stop visiting them after he had what he wanted; the information. Sincerely, taking advantage of their confidence to have them confess what happened and later on publish a book on it thus going against his promises was the highest degree of betrayal. Put yourself in their shoes, what will you feel? It is true no one will be happy about it.
This author can be regarded as one of the selfish people to have ever existed. Imagine he is just waiting for his so called "friends" to be executed so that he might finish his book, the cold blood. He is so happy knowing he will be famous and in addition get a lot out of the book that most Americans will be eager to read. He is wrong, what come up unto his after publishing the book was the opposite of what he was expected. People condemned his highly for his selfish behavior that led him to be overwhelmed by guilty. In his last day we establish that people knew of his betrayal and out of guilty he died of alcoholic. At his point of death he was nobody (Butler, 2004).
More importantly, this book outlines the issue of capital punishment where one is regard to be executed as a result of his actions. Yes it is true that capital punishment has there since memorials, but I do not think that it is the best way of punishing someone. It may not be the best, but sometimes the fear of death may be the only reason for people to obey society`s rules. For a long time, we humans have been operating on the system of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. However, I do not see it as the best option of solving the problem in our societies. God`s commandment is against having someone killed and we should respect that (Butler, 2004).
The "reader" is a story of a Germany youngster, Michael Berg who is helped by a stranger lady, Hanna. She is double his age, but out of humor she attends to Michael who happened to have scarlet fever. After the boy recover, he returns back to her to say thank you. In the process they are enclosed in an affair. Hanna takes the advantage of the boy`s innocence to sleep with her. Out of the goodness Michael discovers from sex, he is unable to settle at home. Every time he is running to this wonderful woman to have it again. What a sweet discovery! Their bond grows stronger and Michael discovers also his lover is motivated by having him read to her different books. This becomes his habit.
Hanna without Michael`s knowledge disappears, thus betraying his trust in her. For many years he cannot forget this good lady unto him. In eight years after her disappearance Michael is a grown up and a lawyer serving the Nazi crime trials. To his surprise he finds her "lover", Hanna has one of the defendants in the courtroom.
Michael is now in a position to know the truth about Hanna. Michael is disgust at what this woman has done but his feelings are clashing head-on with his cherished memory of their deep, sensitive, intimate relationship. Michaels is wondering should he revenge, that is do justice to people that were killed or betray the act of humor and the affair they had with this woman. He cannot withstand the level of guilt he will experience and he unable to draw a line on where to stand. Still the book also brings in the issue of capital punishment which goes against the biblical teaching and portrays an act that this totally unethical (Butler, 2004). The "reader" by Stephen Daldry is a movie of this story.
The "dead man" walking by Tim Robbins explains to us the kind life prisoners go through will in prison. Yes, they have done the extreme in the society but do they really deserve this treatment. If we act the same as them what will make us different. The aut...
