After the failed protest of MOMA’s show in spring of 1985 which was an international survey of painting and sculpture that was featuring 169 artists in total including 13 females, the Guerrilla Girls were formed. They referred to themselves as the conscience of the art world. It was during the feminism and activism crucial period. There are still major systematic problems despite the fact that there are encouraging signs of the status of women that are improved in the world of art (Maura, 2015) Women are now able to access high art education unlike how they were being denied in history. However, as much as this group was an activist group, all their actions were against the art world.
Early at the beginning of their career, the Guerilla girls were all about public activism through their rallies and protests. They participated in private protests and even had the chance of giving out awards. their show the Guerilla Girls Review the Whitney criticized the institutions from within. Their protests were basically to ask for more artistic freedom, the lack of women artists in exhibitions and to make the museums available to everyone in general.
